Two more wins for 25's in tourney

Carrington Post 25 garnered a pair of victories at the Mid-Summer Classic, taking a 9-3 win over the Royals of Valley City Post 60, and needing extra innings to take down the Grafton Post 41 Spoilers, 8-7.

Both of Post 25's games were played at Charlie Brown Memorial Field in Valley City over a two-day span, Friday and Saturday, June 23-24. The Classic also held several games in Jamestown as well.

The Redbirds had seven hits in the win over the hosts on Friday, and leadoff hitter Jack Erickson had a 2-for-3 game with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Also on the offensive side, Kael Kovar registered a multi-hit outing at 2-for-4, stealing two bases and scoring twice.

Hudson Schmitz doubled for Post 25, and additonal hits came off the bats of Owen Hagel and Lucas Hendrickson.

Though he didn't have a hit, Corbin Clifton made his presence felt on the bases with three runs plated for the Redbirds.

Grady Shipman got the win, striking out 10 Royal batters over five innings before giving way to Josh Bickett for the final six outs. Shipman got plenty of run support, as six of Carrington's runs came in the first three innings off Valley City starter and Barnes County North product Will Schwehr.

For Valley City, Robert Fischer and Max Mehus had two hits each, and Aaron Deaver and Carver Pederson had RBIs. Jack Samuelson also added a single.

The Spoilers came to Valley City as a schedule replacement for Fargo Post 400, and right from the get-go, challenged Post 25 and starter Hendrickson with a three-spot in the first inning. Post 25 would trim that deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the frame, and tied it with a run in the second.

The rest of the game was back-and-forth baseball, as the Redbirds answered a single Grafton tally in the third with three of their own. Post 25 would eventually take a 7-5 lead into the seventh, but the 41's tied it in their final at-bat with two runs charged to reliever Schmitz.

Scoring remained deadlocked until the bottom of the eighth, when Schmitz atoned for his blown multi-inning save to hit a walk-off RBI single and score Erickson. Jake Warnke took the loss for Grafton, giving up six runs (three earned) in three innings and five strikeouts.

Those late heroics from Post 25 made a winner out of Bickett in relief, as he threw a clean hitless inning with a strikeout in the eighth.

Grafton starter Trenten Keena was solid in his 4 2/3 innings on the hill, not allowing a hit, but surrendering two runs with inconsistent defense behind him.

Spoiler shortstop Tony Villarreal was 2-for-4, the only Grafton player with multiple hits. Schmitz had that distinction for Carrington as well, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

In victory, Erickson and Hendrickson each hit doubles, and Hagel had two RBIs for the Redbirds.

Jamestown rolls, 17-5

Last Tuesday, Post 25 returned home for a single nine-inning game against the Jamestown Eagles AA team. The hard-hitting big town program made a statement by sending the Redbirds to a 17-5 loss.

Behind an eight-run first inning capped by Mason Lunzman's three-run home run, and another round tripper by Payton Hochhalter in the second, Jamestown improved to 7-7 overall.

The Eagles' hit parade featured three-hit games by Nate Walz and Tyson Jorrison, and two hits apiece by Carson Orr and Jackson Walters.

Shipman had two hits in the loss for Post 25, and Hagel drove in two runs. Trent Ekren started, and took the loss.

Post 25 now sits at 4-2 overall, with both losses coming to the Eagles AA.

A full boxscore and summary from the Tuesday game was not available at press time.

The Redbirds host New Rockford July 5, starting at 5:30 p.m.
