Carol Jean Short, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Short, passed away Sunday morning at the home of her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Short, pneumonia being the cause. Born July 2, 1948, she was just 22 days of age when she died.
Construction on new tracks east of the overpass on the Soo Line is about to get underway, it was announced this week by Herman Kraus, Soo agent. The new track was necessary to hold the long trains now being pulled by a fleet of new diesel engines.
Herman A. Olson, 61, a laborer in the Edmunds community , died in the Carrington Hospital Sunday evening, after being a patient there about a week.
John Bauley, who qualified with a 37, and who shot the same score in every round, won the championship in the annual golf tournament at the Carrington Golf Club Sunday, when 62 men from Carrington, Cooperstown, Devils Lake, Harvey, Jamestown and New Rockford participated.
Remains of Cpl. Harry Walen, who lost his life in Italy during the last war, arrived in Carrington Wednesday morning, accompanied by military escort. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Walen of Glenfield. He died of pneumonia December 24,1944.
“Blondie’s Anniversary” with Arthur Lake and Penny Singleton, is showing for the last time tonight at the Grand Theatre. Friday and Saturday will be Maria Montez and Rod Cameron starring in “Pirates of Monterey,” a technicolor picture. Ginger Rogers and Cornel Wilde take the leading roles in “It Had To Be You,” to be shown at the Grand on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
Geo. P. Collins, former publisher of the Foster County Independent, died Saturday, July 24, at his home in mission Beach, Calif. He had been in poor health for several years, but had been quite active in his business.

Two cars were demolished in a fiery crash on the Barlow road east of Highway 281 early Sunday morning. Despite the damage to the vehicles, only one person suffered injury. Mark Linderman of Barlow, the driver of one car, was hospitalized briefly at Carrington Hospital but was released the same morning.
Gary Hoffman, Grace City, driver of the second car and Leo Gauderman, Juanita, a passenger, escaped the vehicle as it ignited. Neither was hurt.
Loretta Kraus, Norman Hanson and Wayne Looysen have been named delegates to the American Legion national convention in Honolulu, to convene at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Aug. 15-23. Mrs. Kraus is the first woman from the state to be named a delegate to the national convention.
Patty Clark and Bevin Heinley of Carrington achieved the spring quarter honor roll of N.D. State University-Bottineau Branch.
A Jamestown High School student, Russ Newman, played consistent golf to win the 1973 Carrington Invitational Tournament Sunday. Newman, who will be a senior at Jamestown, completed 27 holes in 109, one stroke better than Les Olafson of Carrington and Guy Otteson of Bismarck.
Carrington Company A of the National Guard will construct a float bridge at Lake Hiawatha, at Sykeston, as part of its monthly training Saturday and Sunday. The public is invited to watch construction and guardmen’s refresher training in assault river crossing and engineer training.
Sheryl Landon and Leonard Woehl were married June 16 at 8 p.m. in Kvernes Lutheran Church of Carrington. Parents are Mr. and Mrs. Ara Landon and Mr. and Mrs. William Woehl.

The footings for the new sports bar at the Chieftain Conference Center were poured and the addition continues. Besides the bar on the northwest corner of the lot, a delivery receiving and storage garage will be added along with a Jacuzzi area. Klocke Construction is the general contractor.
Vandalism closed the Carrington swimming pool for a day due to someone dumping a garbage can and its contents into the pool. The discovery was made when Park Board Commissioner Brian Harrington went to the pool to let in a chemical deliveryman.
Bill Bauer is retiring from Northern Plains Electric Cooperative after 40 years of service. He began his career as an apprentice lineman and through his career became Northern Plains line superintendent.
Scott Buchholtz has been named the new manager of operations for Northern Plains Electric Cooperative. He is assuming the responsibilities of Bill Bauer, who retired last month.

Amanda Montgomery, Carrington, earned junior champion showmanship honors at the 1998 North Dakota Junior Angus Show held June 18 in West Fargo.
There were seven golds for Foster County athletes at the Prairie Rose State Games. Those individuals were as follows: Travis Carr, Carrington, wrestling, age 17-18, 150 pounds; Lenore Franchuk, Carrington, 5K run, age 45-49; Kelly Hagel, Carrington, wrestling ages 35 and over; Mike Skadberg, Carrington, wrestling, age 17-18, 119 pounds; Shane Wallace, McHenry, bowling, age 12-14 non-league; Taryn Wallace, McHenry, bowling, ages 8 and under, non-league; Josh Harildstad, Carrington wrestling, age 15-16, 182 pounds.
