Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Matheny, former Carrington residents, celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary on Sunday, August 22, at their home in Monterey Park, Calif.
Sgt. Ernie Day, whose remains were brought home for burial last week, was buried with military honors Sunday afternoon at a service at the Carrington Cemetery, with Rev. E.E. Lang in charge. Pallbearers were Robert Semmens, Ray White, Thos. Dunn, Jr., Warren Duntley, James Sharbono and Jack Sheets.
C.W. Yoder, C.L. Vreeland and Peter Edinger flew to Bismarck Tuesday to attend the state game conference at which recommendations for this year’s game hunting seasons were made. The three represented the Foster County chapter of the Wildlife Federation, of which Yoder is president.
Miss Vickie Johnson of Sykeston was taken to the Carrington Hospital at midnight Sunday after she had been injured in an automobile accident on Highway 281 a mile east of Barlow. She is being treated for a leg fracture and shock. There were three other occupants of the car, which was driven by Leo Huss of Sykeston. The other two were Ervin Laber and Robert Huss. Ervin had bruises and suffered from shock. Robert was treated for shock and Leo had a sprained foot.
The Hilmer Forsberg home, Juanita, was struck by lightning during an electrical storm early Friday morning. The lightning hit the chimney and broke it open, scattering brick across the upstairs and cracking walls. Mrs. Forsberg was dazed for a short time.
Four girls were born recently at Carrington Hospital. They were: Aug. 10 girl to Mr. and Mrs. Herman Mehring, Edmunds, Aug. 21 girl to Mr. and Mrs. Dale Linderman, Carrington, Aug. 24 - girl to Mr. and Mrs. Orville Lundby, Sykeston; girl to Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Thorstenson, Bowdon.

The birdhouse goes on the line as the Cardinals meet the Orioles this Friday evening in the season opener for both teams. The annual “Birdhouse” game is a tradition that stretches back to 1935, when the Orioles blanked the cards 14-1. The birdhouse is painted red and white on one side and orange and black on the other to indicate school colors. It has rested in Carrington’s trophy case since 1963 although no games were played between 1969 and 1971. The winner of each annual game is noted on the bottom of the birdhouse. The tally to date is Carrington 18 victories, Fessenden 16 and two ties.
Gerald Englestad has accepted employment as a secondary teacher in Australia. He was among 92 recent UND graduates who obtained employment in August, according to the UND Placement Center. Gerald is son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Engelstad of Carrington.
A collision on Highway 281 near the Barlow junction took the life of a New Rockford woman early Wednesday morning, Aug. 22. The victim was Mrs. William (Jene) Frazer who, with her husband, was well known in the Barlow area as a proprietor of the Barlow Coach Tavern.
Karen Olafson won both the championship and medalist honors at the Carrington Women’s Golf Tournament Aug. 22. Mrs. Olafson’s score of 100 for 18 holes was the best in a field of 16 golfers. Betty Hove and Cynthia Willyard took second and third places in the championship flight. They had scores of 105 and 107 respectively.
The 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Reinhold Lange was celebrated at an open house and reception at Trinity Lutheran Church Sunday, Aug. 19.

On Monday, Aug. 24 Leo and Marie Laber’s home in rural Sykeston was destroyed. Fire Chief Dennis Hafner termed the home a “total loss.” The fire was apparently caused by a short in the breaker box in the basement.
Travelers between Carrington and Jamestown were given a reprieve last week when Highway 281 opened up, after an agreement was reached between officials of the two cities and the Department of Transportation. A summer-long road construction project on the highway had re-routed 281 traffic and added miles to the trip. The road opened to light traffic last Wednesday.
Carrington school enrollment is up slightly over last year, with about 758 students starting classes last Thursday.
Carrington School district has five new program aides for Title 1 at the elementary school. New comer, Cheryl Wold, Title 1 teacher, is heading up the team. New aides include Lynette Hallwachs, Lisa Klocke, Sheila White, Jan Anderson and Julie Gardner. Also new to the district this year include Daniel Wold, the new high school counselor, Mary Harvala, instructor of high school band and choir along with sixth-grade band, and Bradley Rinas, high school principal.
Lon Schaffer has been named the new manager of the Carrington Vets Club. He replaces Marilyn Nichols, who moved to the position of kitchen manager.
New Arrivals - Heather Alayna, daughter of Dori and Tim Tollefson, New Rockford, born August 20 at the Carrington Health Center.
Obituaries - Erling K. Rolfson, 77, New Rockford, died August 22 in Hazen.
