Hornet netters start season at tournaments

The 2023 Hornet varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams both saw their first action at tournaments in Bottineau and Rugby on Saturday, August 26.

The varsity girls spent the day competing at the Bottineau Invitational, where Coach Kristi Fike thought the girls had a good day.

"Overall, I thought we did a good job," said Fike. "We had two girls missing that usually see a lot of playing time, and two players step in and do really great for them."

In pool play, the Hornets dropped two games to Bottineau, and then defeated Dunseith in two games. In tournament play, the Hornets dropped two game matches to both North Star and North Prairie.

Coach Fike added that the HWC volleyball future looks really good once they get everyone back and develop the cohesiveness between the girls.

The HWC junior varsity also opened play on August 26, with a tournament in Rugby. The JV girls cruised through the competition, winning the championship for the second year in a row. The team defeated St. John, Bottineau and Nedrose in pool play, and then defeated Rugby in the semifinals and TGU in the finals, 2-1. The set loss in the finals was the only game of the day in which the Hornets lost.
