Obituary: Vikki Sondag

Vikki Sondag

Vikki Ann Sondag, age 72, of Carrington, N.D., died peacefully on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at Essentia Hospital in Fargo, N.D. She was surrounded by her family and friends at the time of her passing.

Vikki's visitation was on Thursday, September 7 from 1:00 - 7:00 p.m., with a Rosary Service at 6:45 p.m., followed by a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m., all at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington, N.D.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, September 8 at 10:30 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Carrington, N.D., with Fr. Terry Dodge officiating. Music included the Sacred Heart Choir and pianist, Marlene Boyer. Her burial was at the Carrington Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Robert Smith, Thomas Smith, Douglas Smith, Cory McKibben, Clinton Schaeffer and Joshua Schmieg.

Honorary pallbearers were all of Vikki's grandchildren.

Vikki was born in Carrington on March 19, 1951, to James and Jean Smith. She was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and attended elementary and high school in Carrington as well, graduating in 1969.

She married Gary Sondag on August 21, 1971, in Carrington, where they made a home and raised their family. Vikki attended the North Dakota State School of Science, earning an LPN certification. She later returned to school to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, graduating from Jamestown College. Vikki served as an RN for many years in Carrington and Jamestown, having a lasting impact on her patients, co-workers, and communities.

In addition to her profession, Vikki found happiness in cooking and crafting. She was an excellent cook, using recipes as suggestions rather than instructions, relying on her intuition as a guide. Her kitchen creations were a testament to her creativity, with her chocolate cake being a family favorite. Her delicious, homemade dishes brought warmth to every occasion.

Vikki also enjoyed crocheting, crafting beautiful afghans that she shared with her loved ones. Her crochet work will be cherished as an enduring symbol of her love.

Vikki is survived by her husband, Gary; four children, Eric (Cindy) Sondag and their children, Elle, Owen, and Ben; Tana (Cory) McKibben, and their children, Nela and Kaedyn; Beth (Josh) Schmieg, and their children, Nevaeh, Traeh and Elijaeh; Kara (Clint) Schaeffer, and their children, Ava, Rogen and Lenny; her sisters, Sheri and Eileen and her brothers, Bob, Tom and Doug.

Vikki was preceded in death by her father, James Smith; her mother, Jean Smith; and her brother, Dan Smith.
