HWC net crew's winning streak now up to four

Harvey-Wells County won their third and fourth consecutive road matches last week, defeating the St. John Woodchucks and Griggs/Midkota Titans on their home floors in three and four-game matches.

The Hornets are now 4-1 in regular season play and 1-3 in tournament play, for an overall record of 5-4.

HWC 3, St. John 0

Harvey-Wells County powered their way to a three game sweep over St. John in Region 4 volleyball action on Tuesday, September 12, in St. John.

From the start, the Hornets were the more powerful team at the net. The setting of Kali Fike and the kills of Braylee Keller and Ashley Keller were too much for the Woodchucks with which to contend. St. John showed a lot of power, but many of their kill opportunities ended up in the net on their side of the court.

Braylee Keller's two kills out of the gate early got HWC rolling, but the home team would stick around as the two teams were tied at five. A Rachel Neumiller kill and ace, along with kills from Ashley Keller and Rylee Jones, moved the lead to 15-8, and the Hornets never looked back. Quite a few hitting errors ended game one, with HWC winning, 25-11.

The second game of the night had a similar start, as both teams were tied at five before HWC pulled away. A Neumiller and Jones kill moved the lead to 11-6, and the Hornets eventually took a 19-11 lead. St. John made a nice rally late in the game with a Morgen Disrud kill and back-to-back aces from Aubree Jeanotte to cut the lead to 19-16. Ashley Keller's kill made the game 24-17, and a net serve from St. John gave HWC a 25-19 win.

St. John had a nice start in game three, as they led 4-2 early with the help of a Katelynn Counts kill. With the game knotted at seven, kills from Braylee Keller and Ashley Keller moved the lead to 11-9, and a kill from Jones opened the gap even further at 18-11. Once again, the Woodchucks made a nice run late in the game, as an Alani Morin kill and a few Hornets miscues helped St. John pull to within 20-16. Ashley Keller helped end the night as the senior had the final three HWC points, all via kills, in a 25-18 game three win, resulting in the 3-0 match victory.

HWC 3, Griggs-Midkota 1

HWC won their fourth consecutive volleyball match, defeating the Griggs/Midkota Titans in four games on Thursday, September 14, in Binford.

The Hornets started game one strong, using a kill and ace from Fike and a kill from Neumiller as they led, 8-5. Kills from G-M's Kennedy Reidman and Kadance Klubben kept the game within four midway through. Back-to-back kills from Jones were followed up by two kills from Braylee Keller, as the lead grew to 18-10. Braylee Keller had two aces down the stretch, as HWC won the opening game, 25-13.

Game two was a very similar game for the teams. The score was knotted at six, before kills from Ashley Keller and Neumiller helped open up a 11-6 advantage. The Titans pulled to within 13-11, but Braylee Keller's back-to-back kills gave HWC a 19-13 lead. Fike and Ashley Keller had kills late in game two, as the Hornets claimed a 25-17 win.

The Titans had a great start in game three, as Kelsey Johnson served four consecutive points for a 5-2 lead. Reidman's back-to-back kills moved the lead to 9-4 for Griggs/Midkota, but the Hornets responded nicely. Ashley Keller's two kills, along with another from Neumiller, pulled HWC to within 10-8. A series of Hornet errors, including four hits, net kills and long shots, along with some outstanding defense effort from the Titans, helped G-M take a 14-9 lead.

The Hornets battled back to 14-13, but another Titan run, courtesy of two more kills from Reidman moved the G-M lead to 19-14. With Brooklyn Dockter serving, HWC got two aces from Dockter and two kills from Braylee Keller, and the Hornets had a 20-19 lead. The game was tied at 23 before the Titans claimed game three, 25-23.

Game four started great if you were a Titan fan or player. G-M jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead behind a block and a kill from Kelsey Johnson. HWC responded nicely once again with three kills from Neumiller, a block from Ashley Keller and an ace from Braylee Keller and the Hornets led, 8-7. The lead grew to 16-9 behind two aces from Taylor Nelson and a kill from Jones.

A Johnson kill brought the Titans to within 17-16 before the Hornets put distance between the teams with an ace from Fike. The Hornets led 24-18 on an ace from Nelson but G-M scored four straight points late with kills from Vanessa Vollmer. The Hornets claimed the set and match with a Fike kill, winning 25-22.

Statistically, HWC had an incredibly balanced attack. Three players saw nine kills each in Ashley Keller, Braylee Keller and Neumiller. Ashley Keller and Neumiller each had five blocks, while Braylee Keller led with six aces. Fike dished out 29 assists and led six players with double-digits digs, with 17.

The Titans got 12 kills from Kelsey Johnson and 31 digs from Ryan Johnson. Vollmer and Reidman were also in double digits in kills with 10 each.
