Rockets halt HWC's winning streak at five matches

Harvey-Wells County ran their road win streak to five games with a sweep over the Cardinals in Washburn, but ran into one of Region 4's top contenders in New Rockford-Sheyenne as they were on the other end of a three-game sweep at the hands of the Rockets.

HWC 3, Washburn 0

The Hornets traveled to Washburn on Tuesday, September 19, and came away with a three-game sweep of the Cardinals with wins of 25-18, 25-11 and 25-12. With the win, the Hornets moved to 5-1 during the regular season and 6-4 overall.

HWC started a little too strong, as both their kill attempts to open the first game went long. It didn't take the Hornets long to right the ship, as the game was quickly tied at three. A kill from Ashley Keller, along with a kill and an ace from Rachel Neumiller and a kill from Rylee Jones separated the two teams, moving HWC to an 11-6 lead. The Cardinals kept the game with three for a majority and tied the game at 18 on a kill from Dara Beck. Jones and Braylee Keller smashed down kills late in the game, and the Hornets finished on a strong note, scoring the final seven points for the 25-18 win.

Washburn held a slim 4-3 lead early when Braylee Keller started the serve. The freshman had an ace and helped the team score five straight for an HWC 9-4 lead. Back-to-back aces from Ashlyn Schmitz pulled the Cardinals back to within 9-8. With Taylor Nelson serving, HWC would score 11 straight points, which included three kills from Ashley Keller and two more by Neumiller for a 22-8 lead. A Neumiller kill and Ashley Keller kill ended game two, 25-11.

HWC got the strong start in game three with Brooklyn Dockter serving. The sophomore served four straight points, and the Hornets' lead was 6-2. Two kills from Braylee Keller opened another big lead for HWC, as they jumped out to a commanding 13-6 advantage. The Cardinals pulled to within five with kills from Monica Goven and Schmitz. Four Hornets found the kill category late in game three with Braylee Keller, Ashley Keller, Neumiller and Nelson all getting in on the action, as the Hornets won game three, 25-12, and the match 3-0.

Kali Fike led the statistical categories with 23 assists, four aces and nine digs. Ashley Keller was in double digits with 10 kills.

NR-S 3, HWC 0

New Rockford-Sheyenne put a stop to the Hornets' five-game road streak in dominating fashion, taking down HWC in straight sets on Thursday, September 21, at New Rockford.

NR-S started strong, taking a quick 9-3 lead behind three kills and two aces from Kelsie Belquist. Ava Peterson helped with an ace and a kill for the Rockets. Kills from Braylee Keller and Nelson kept the Hornets within distance, but a four-point streak late in the game moved the NR-S lead to 20-10. Neumiller's kill and two service errors from NR-S gave HWC a 5-2 run late, but the Rockets finished off game one on an ace from Kaiya O'Connor and a kill from Lora Wobbema for the 25-16 victory.

The Hornets had a strong start in game two, taking an early 7-4 lead courtesy of kills from Ashley Keller, Neumiller, Fike and an ace from Jones. With Belquist serving, the Rockets scored seven straight, with an ace from Belquist and three kills from Lucy Meier doing the damage. Kills from Wobbema and O'Connor and an ace from Logan Cudworth kept the Rockets going, but HWC kept the game close, trailing just 18-13. Two more kills from Meier, along with kills from Kelsie Belquist and O'Connor, helped NR-S finish the game on a 7-2 run winning 25-15.

The deciding game of the night went to NR-S, which started the game fast at 12-3. The Hornets would cut the lead to six points at 12-6, but never contended in the 25-11 Rocket victory.

Leading the way for NR-S was Meier with 13 kills, and Belquist with 11. HWC was led by Neumiller's six kills. Peterson dished out 31 assists on the night, and O'Connor had five of the Rockets' 13 aces.

With the win, the Rockets moved to 5-1 on the season, while the five game win streak for HWC disappeared and left them at 6-5 overall.
