Walk-off score gives Broncos win over Cards

The previous 47 minutes and roughly 57 seconds of football at Sandager Field in Lisbon came down to one potential game-saving goal line stand for Carrington.

In search of their fifth straight victory, the Cards took their first lead of the contest at 27-26 just under two minutes to play, on a Grady Shipman 15-yard touchdown catch and extra point kick.

However, Bronco senior quarterback Wyatt Olson would have the last salvo, sneaking just past the goal line as the clock struck zero to give Lisbon a heart-stopping 32-27 win Friday night, September 22.

The non-region loss for Carrington (4-2, 4-1 Region 2) came after erasing a 13-point halftime deficit against their Region 1 opponent, thanks to their defense stepping up and making the plays they didn't in the first half.

Until Shipman's score, the Broncos never trailed, and got on the board first with a Blaze Reinke 34-yard touchown reception from Olson in the first quarter.

McKade Zink answered for CHS with a 51-yard catch and run from quarterback Josh Bickett to knot the score at six all, but Cameron Opp scored from 32 yards out to give the Broncos a 12-6 lead after one.

Second quarter offense for Lisbon (4-1, 3-1 Region 1) netted two touchdowns, both coming from Mike Nelson with 10 and 44-yard plays. In between those, the Cards' Logan Weninger hauled in a 31-yard pass from Bickett for CHS' second and final score of the half.

Down 26-13, whatever adjustments were made and speeches said by the Cardinal coaches at the break must have worked, as the team played with a bit more urgency from then on.

In the third quarter, junior Corbin Clifton squirted through the defense for a 71-yard score to get within 26-20.

The would-be game-winning drive for Carrington culminated on a fourth-and-long play and several clutch conversions when penalties threatened to stop it.

Bickett passed for 169 yards on 11-for-19 passing for three scores. Clifton was the leading rusher with 97 yards on only four carries.

Defensively, Zink had the best game of the season numbers-wise, with 19 total tackles.
