Volley for a cause

The Carrington Cardinals donned their special pink jerseys Tuesday night, October 10, when they played the Oakes Tornadoes in District 5 play.

The color pink is the official color of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is held annually in October. Members of the volleyball program collected donations from spectators throughout the match, with all proceeds going to area women fighting their battles individually.

As far as action on the court went, the Cards and Tornadoes went to five sets, as has been their tendency over much of the past decade when the two evenly-matched teams meet. This match would end up going to the Tornadoes by scores of 25-10, 23-25, 23-25, 25-22 and 13-15.

With the win, Oakes improved to 4-2 in District 5 matches, while the Cards fell to 3-2.

Ann Muggli, the 6'0" junior middle blocker for the Tornadoes, finished with 26 kills and five stuffs for the victors. Brianna Schmitz added 10 kills and Lily Thorpe eight.

The Cards were paced by 23 kills from Isabel Wendel, with 16 more coming off the hand of Madison Johnson.

Carrington travels to Glenfield tonight (October 16) to face Griggs/Midkota in District 5 action, and will host regional opponent Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter Tuesday night for Senior/Parent Night in the East Gym.

Full statistics from the Carrington/Oakes match will be published in next week's issue.
