Blazing the trail: Cards' Pazdernik wins girls' Region title in Cooperstown

Ten years (plus two days) to the day since it last happened, the Carrington cross country team has an East Region champion runner.

Junior Kenadie Pazdernik crossed the finish line in 19 minutes, 55.5 seconds to capture victory in the girls' race at the penultimate postseason meet in Cooperstown Saturday morning, October 21.

Her win was the first for a CHS runner at regionals since Ashley Neumiller won the race as a freshman in 2013.

As a team, CHS finished in sixth place for the girls' standings with 150 points, behind champion Rugby (54) and runner-up Hillsboro/Central Valley (66).

The Cards had a very strong performance in the girls' division. Kaylin Pate had her best showing of the year, finishing just one spot shy of All-Region status in 21st place with a 21:23 time.

Other scorers for Carrington included Macy Fiebiger (43rd, 22:14), Cyrena Kuss (61st, 22:59.6) and Joie Helseth (64th, 23:03.4).

Griggs/Midkota's Kadence Spickler was the youngest runner to make the All-Region field, placing 16th in a swift 21.11.7 clocking. The seventh grader and Grace City native had the top overall run for Titan athletes.

On the boys' side, the Titans' Luka Berg was the lone local placer in the All-Region ranks, as he came across in 17th at 17:52.6.

Joe Lindberg's time of 18:30.1 seconds was good enough for the CHS runner to finish in 27th overall. Gabe Inglish, who took 96th (21:01), was the only other runner in the top 100 for the Cards.

For M-P-B, Shawna Nix took 91st for the best Thunder placing, and New Rockford-Sheyenne's Gabe Smith, a seventh grader, was a top 100 entrant in the boys' race, finishing in 90th.

The State Class B Cross Country Meet was held this past Friday, October 27, at Parkhurst Recreation Area in rural Jamestown.

Pazdernik will try to become the first individual state champion in Cardinal history, but once again, sophomore Brynn Hanson of Des Lacs-Burlington is the favorite to take her third straight Class B crown.

Expected to challenge for the team races are three-time defending boys' champion Bowman County and Kindred, while Rugby will be going for five straight on the girls' side and could get a challenge from Bowman County in that race.
