CHS takes three from Titans in tournament first round

District 5 Tournament officials had to come up with a creative solution to get their first game of the day in the books.

The weather in Oakes was sufficiently calm Thursday, October 26, to allow teams involved in the final two first round games to face off in Tornado Alley.

However, by the luck of geography and the winter storm’s path, Carrington and Griggs/Midkota, the two northernmost District 5 programs, were unable to travel southeast.

The Cardinals and Titans, the district’s fourth and fifth seeds, tangled in the MHS Gym in Glenfield for their opening round match, one that would ultimately be won by Carrington, 3-0. Scores from the sets were 25-23, 25-13 and 25-17.

CHS, wearing their home whites as the higher- seeded team, got a spirited battle from G-M in set one before prevailing by two. The second and third sets featured strong team play from the Cards to stifle the Titans’ momentum, gained from a five-set narrow defeat to NR-S three nights prior.

Madison Johnson swung for 14 kills to lead all players on the court. Other Carrington top contributors included Isabel Wendel with 21 assists and nine kills, Harper Kollman with eight kills, and seven combined blocks by Edyn Hoornaert and Kaydence VanRay.

G-M was led by five kills each by Kennedy Reidman and Vanessa Vollmer. Kelsey Johnson and Ryan Johnson both finished with 24 digs for the Titans, and Emma McCullough had 15 assists.

With the win, CHS advanced to play top seeded E-K-M (see related article), and Griggs/Midkota got a bye from Friday’s play into the region qualifier round against Oakes last Monday.
