Thunder blockers Destiny Opp and Brynn Sorenson go up to challenge a hit from a Kidder County player Monday night, October 30, at the District 6 Tournament in Napoleon.
Medina/Pingree-Buchanan's five-match run through the District 6 regular season provided them with confidence they could get the two straight wins to take the tournament plaque in Napoleon Monday-Tuesday, October 30-31.
The first part of that equation came to pass, but not the second, as the Linton-HMB Lions rose up to take a four-set win in the championship over the Thunder last Tuesday evening.
In a three-set win over Kidder County (25-6, 25-17 and 25-18), M-P-B sustained a costly loss, as senior leader Allison Thomas left the first set of play after a significant knee injury.
Coach Jacie Connell said that pending the results of an MRI, there is the possibility of a tear, which would most likely derail her basketball season as well.
For both the semifinal and championship rounds, the Thunder were led by junior Maddie Gefroh. She had 19 kills against the Wolves, and 21 in the title matchup.
Sophomore Brynn Sorenson had matching nine-kill stat sheets in the two games, and setter Violet Bohl combined for 66 assists over seven sets of play.
Alaina Bosche had 32 digs in the loss to Linton-HMB. She, along with Thomas and Gefroh, were named to the All-District 6 Team.
The Thunder swept the premier individual awards as well, as Connell was named District 6 Coach of the Year with Thomas getting top Senior Athlete.
M-P-B took on the Oakes Tornadoes in the final Region 3 Tournament game of the night Monday, November 6 in Ellendale.
Other first round matchups included Carrington vs. Linton-HMB, LaMoure/L-M vs. South Border, and E-K-M vs. Kidder County.
