The M-P-B Thunder's offense found it hard to gain much traction in a pair of defeats to begin the 2023-24 girls' basketball season, but got their groove back last Tuesday night with a 65-53 win against Warwick.
At Maple Valley High School Thursday, November 30, the Thunder scored just 11 first half points in a 44-28 loss to the Maple River (Maple Valley/Hope-Page) Raiders.
In their following game with Oakes, M-P-B couldn't get the shots to fall in the second half, with 10 points in another defeat, 40-31, at the hands of the Tornadoes in Pingree on Saturday, December 2.
Junior post Maddie Gefroh led M-P-B with 10 points in the loss to the Raiders. Cale Redlin scored six points in her first varsity start, and Abby Ryun also added five for the Thunder.
Three players scored in double figures for Maple River, with Violet Richman's 14 points leading the way. BriElle Killoran put in 13 points, with Adyson Hannig going for 10.
Alaina Bosche took a turn being the M-P-B offensive catalyst against Oakes, scoring 12 points. Gefroh and Cierra Mack each scored six tallies prior to fouling out later in the contest.
The Tornadoes made use of 13 points by junior guard Brianna Schmitz to take the nine-point win. Kassidy Jackson and Lily Thorpe both accounted for 10 points in Oakes' scorebook.
At the line, Oakes shot an even 50 percent for the game, going 18-for-36. Jackson was the top shooter at 6-for-8.
Tuesday play in Pingree pitted the Thunder opposite the Lady Warriors, and a balanced scoresheet gave M-P-B their first triumph of 2023-24.
Two players led the team in double digits. Gefroh finished with 13 points, and Violet Bohl had her best game of the early season with 12 points, all in the first three quarters.
Warwick's offense largely went through the hands of Madison Cavanaugh. Scoreless in the first quarter, the senior forward exploded for 25 points in the final three quarters. Bethany Brown also scored 15 points for the Warriors.
This winter, the Thunder will be without the services of senior guard and team leader Allison Thomas, following a career-ending knee injury at the end of the volleyball season.
M-P-B (1-2 overall), along with the aforementioned two teams, will be playing in the newly-realigned Region 1. Maple River and Oakes are in District 1, while the Thunder play in District 2.
In upcoming games, the Thunder travel to Glenfield to take on Griggs/Midkota on Tuesday, December 12, and later face the Larimore Polar Bears at the University of Jamestown's Harold Newman Arena Saturday, December 16, at 1:30 p.m.
