Towards the end of last season on the wrestling mat, things were starting to come together for then-CHS sophomore Dru Carr.
After several seasons taking his licks as a lightweight grappler for the Cards and learning how to turn losses into wins, Carr had his breakout season in 2022-23 with a sixth-place finish in the old 113-pound weight class at the State B Tournament.
He took that confidence into this year's Al Larson Memorial Wrestling Tournament, and won his first-ever weekend event with four straight wins to bolster his season record thus far to 9-3.
That showing, including a defeat over Lisbon's Cruz Reinke in overtime in the 121-pound championship match, enabled Carr to be named as one of the three Brock Gussiaas MVP (Outstanding Wrestler) winners Saturday, December 9.
Carr was presented with the award along with Lisbon's Ian Anderson and Bishop Ryan's Coy Okeson. He is the son of Travis and Hope Carr of Carrington.
The award is named for former Cardinal wrestler and assistant coach Brock Gussiaas, who tragically passed away in 2014. It has been given annually to outstanding performers at the Al Larson Tournament.
