Eighth grader Addisyn Faul calmly drained two free throws with five seconds remaining in the overtime period to seal an exciting 60-58 win for HWC over the Velva Aggies in Velva on Thursday, December 7.
The Hornets had a solid start to the opening quarter, with Rachel Neumiller hitting a three and scoring five while Breanna Heilman added four more points, helping HWC take a 13-6 lead. The Aggies finished the first up with two free throws from Taryn Braaten and field goals from Natalie Nechiporenko and Kaylee Tomlinson, cutting the HWC lead to 13-12 after one.
A high scoring second quarter saw HWC take a 20-16 lead. Six quick points from Velva gave the Aggies a short-lived lead, as Braylee Keller scored two and Neumiller added four more points, giving the Hornets a 27-22 lead. Once again, Velva finished the quarter up strong with two from Tomlinson, two from Olivia Miller and a three close to the buzzer from Anna Harden, giving the home team a 29-28 lead at the half.
Heilman started the third quarter with a field goal and two free throws, but Lyla McCasson answered with a three from Velva. HWC was 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the third quarter to score 15 points, but five points from eighth grader Evalyn Selzler kept the score close at 43-40 with eight minutes left.
Faul's field goal and free throw midway through the fourth gave HWC a 49-43 lead, but Velva again had a strong finish in store. The Aggies scored eight straight with four from Nechiporenko and four from Selzler, as they took over the lead at 51-49. The Hornets ended the fourth with Keller finding a sprinting Faul for a layup to tie the game at 51 and send it to overtime.
HWC started the OT with Heilman going 2-of-4 from the line and Neumiller adding a field goal for a four-point lead. Harden hit a three pointer with 30 seconds remaining to cut the lead to one, but Neumiller answered with another field goal and a 58-55 lead. Faul calmly sank two free throws with 5.4 seconds left on the clock to give HWC a five point lead and then Harden hit her third three of the game for the Aggies at the buzzer for the final score of 60-58.
HWC placed four players in double digit scoring with Keller leading the way with 16, including 11 in the second half. Keller also had a huge game on the boards with 18 rebounds and dished out 5 assists. Neumiller added 15, Heilman 13 and Faul 12 were the others in doubles. Velva had four players with nine or more with Selzler leading the way with 12. Miller and Nechiporenko were also in doubles with 10 each.
