In the switch from two to three divisions in basketball, one subsection of schools was particularly affected, those being the private schools.
The long-time Region 5 powers in both boys and girls basketball, Shiloh Christian of northeast Bismarck, were one of those teams placed into the new Division A.
And, if the final score of their girls game with Carrington was any indicator, the new intra-divisional rivalries should be tense battles indeed.
The Skyhawks clawed back from trailing by seven points at halftime, flustered the Cardinals with timely turnovers, and made just enough plays to escape the East Gym with a 53-52 thriller Thursday night, December 7.
“The girls gave good effort, but we need to handle [the ball] better,” said CHS Coach Andy Braaten. “Twenty-nine turnovers will not usually get the win for you.”
In the third quarter, Shiloh turned the tables with a 17-9 advantage, and would keep the Cards at arms’ length for the rest of the contest.
Hitting some big shots for the ‘Hawks in that stanza was senior post Emily Hammeren. She would score seven points in the third, and led Shiloh (2-0) with 15 points.
The Skyhawks went 4-for-6 at the line down the stretch in the fourth quarter, with Betsy Hatlestad accounting for six big points to help them hold off a determined CHS comeback attempt in the final possessions.
“Shiloh’s big run in the third, along with some clutch shots, helped get them the win,” said Braaten.
Carrington (2-1) got out to a lead in the first half with outsized efforts from Edyn Hoornaert with nine points, Olivia Threadgold (eight points, including two threes), and Kaydence VanRay with six, all coming in the first 16 minutes.
Hoornaert would finish with a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and was also key for the Cards’ offensive efforts passing the ball with four assists.
Threadgold led CHS with 13 points, and Kacie Rexin also achieved double digits with 11 points. Madison Johnson also scored eight, five of those in the first quarter.
