From the Past: CHS students hold dance-a-thon

75 Years Ago

December 30, 1948

The Harvey Hornets defeated Carrington Cardinals at Harvey 49-23 Wednesday night. The hot shooting team of Harvey had little trouble with the Cardinals after the second quarter. The Hornets are the best shooting the Cardinals have hit this season and from all reports have been going great all season.

The local independent team of Company F defeated the high school Cardinals by a 32-29 count Tuesday night. In as good a game as it gets, the two teams battled on even terms for the whole game. The difference between the two teams was the superior height of the independents and the fact that Fruhwirth was definitely on as he hit over 24 points.

“A Date With Judy,” starring Wallace Berry, Jane Powell, and Elizabeth Taylor, will be the Technicolor production at the Grand Theatre on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Maureen O’Hara and John Payne play in “Miracle on 34th Street,” to be shown for the last time tonight.

Don L. Tracy won first place in the JCC-sponsored holiday home decorating contest this year for the second consecutive time. The I.G. Noraker home took second place and the home of Mrs. Lilley Willey third.

After 53 years in business in Carrington, E.L.Beaty closed out his interest here last week and went to California to live with his son Edwin at Monterey Park.

Miss Jeanette Eberhardt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.T. Eberhardt of Juanita, became the bride of William Shenko, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward G. Shenko of Beach, N.D. in a double ring ceremony performed by Father Arrel at St. Mary’s Cathedral Sacristy at Fargo on Thursday, December 16.

Celebrating his sixth birthday anniversary, a group of friends honored Gary Kirchoff at this home last Thursday afternoon.

50 Years Ago

December 26, 1973

Rick Ryum came back from Alaska after being discharged from the Army last August, and he brought a little of the Artic state with him. Glenfield folks have begun to grow accustomed to seeing Rick gliding over the snow pulled by a string of five Siberian Huskies.

CHS students will sacrifice some energy and shoe leather in a dance-a-thon for the benefit of Carrington’s rest homes Thursday evening. The students will dance, “until the last couple drops,” according to Mike Bauer, CHS Canteen Council president.

Carrington Jaycees in December put the final touch on a project that spanned four years. Ed Smith of the Jaycees turned over a check in the amount of $29.33 to the Carrington Park Board to complete payments on the multi-purpose building at the city park.

Three Foster County Farmers Union Senior Youth were presented Torchbearer awards during the N.D. Farmers Union convention held in Bismarck. Presented awards were Jeannine Straley, Terri Zaun and Vicki Zaun, Carrington.

Cardinal varsity wrestlers upped their season record to 5-2 in dual meets with a 29-30 win over Grand Forks Red River Dec. 21.

Mrs. Marilyn Ackman has been named assistant director for home economics for the N.D. Cooperative Extension Service. She has been acting assistant director for several months, since the retirement of Mrs. Kathryn Sughrue from the position.

A technicality cost the Carrington cardinals a much wanted victory over the Lisbon Broncos Dec. 11. After powering to a 91-47 win over the broncos, Cardinal coaches discovered that reserve center Rick Pretzer had spent too much time in the ball game.

Debra Renee Lanenga and Joel DeVillers were united in marriage at a candlelight service Dec. 14 at Sacred Heart church in Carrington. Father Wanzek of Kensal officiated at the double ring ceremony.

December 28, 1998

Linda Butts says “so long” to Prairie Inn and running the restaurant for 22 years. The new owners Curtis and Eva Burnham will take over January 1.

Five-year-old Ashlyn Riedesel had a big smile on her face after her name was drawn as winner of a giant sock of toys Dec. 19 at the Carrington Youth Center. Ashlyn is the daughter of Kristi and Jeff Riedesel of Carrington.

Jerry Schaack of Carrington received the North Dakota Water Wheel award during the 35th Annual North Dakota Water Convention in Bismarck last month. He was recognized for his leadership and perseverance in motivating development of the state’s water resources.

Cindy Murphy and Jodi Burr received their “stash” of cash certificates from this weeks drawings.

Phillip Zink, a seventh-grader from Carrington Elementary School, has won the school-level competition of the National Geography Bee.

Chuck Wiesz, Carrington-based custom spray applicator, was named Applicator of the Year by the North Dakota Agriculture Association. Wiesz said attention to records and keeping up with regulations are important aspects of custom spraying.

Area arrivals - Brandon Ethan Alberts, born Decemnber 17 to Brian Alberts and Waynita Chaske, Oberon, at Carrington Health Center. 6 pounds, 3.4 ounces. Tyler John Hoggarth, born December 21 to Culley and Elizabeth Hoggarth, 6 pounds, 7.3 ounces.

Obituaries - Roderick N. Iverson, 71, New Rockford; Idella Bollingberg McCormick 90, Bremen; Gilbert M. Tufto, 87, New Rockford, (formerly of Sheyenne); Esther Jean Ambers, 73, New Rockford; Lavonne Hanson, 70, Valley City, (formerly of Carrington).

Bob Winandy, junior at Sykeston High School was judged winner of the American Legion High School Oratorical contest. Winandy will now participate in the 4th District American Legion Oratorical Contest in Goodrich.
