Mixed results for HWC cagers at St. John

Harvey-Wells County was on the road for a boys and girls doubleheader against the St. John Woodchucks on Monday, December 18. The girls game was played as scheduled, while the boys game was a makeup game from December 8 originally slated to be played in Harvey.

St. John 67, HWC 41

Girls

The St. John Woodchuck half court press proved to be valuable, as they forced HWC into 26 turnovers in a 67-41 victory on Monday, December 18, in St. John.

Six Woodchuck players scored in the first quarter, including six from Aubree Jeanotte and five from Kaycee Desjarlais, and St. John finished the quarter on a 12-6 run to lead 22-12 after one. Rachel Neumiller scored nine of the 12 first quarter Hornet points.

Desjarlais hit her second three of the night early in the second, but the Hornets played better offensively and defensively in the quarter, and trailed, 36-20, at halftime.

Jeanotte dominated the first half of the third quarter, as the sophomore scored nine points in the first 3:26. Trailing 47-24, the Hornets got points from Neumiller, Breanna Heilman, Addisyn Faul and Braylee Keller to cut the lead to 49-33. Kadence Decoteau stopped the mini HWC run with a three to end the quarter, with St. John leading, 52-33.

St. John turned up the half court pressure again to start the fourth quarter, and the Woodchuck lead grew quickly. A 9-0 run to start the fourth included Decoteau's second three of the night, and the lead was 61-33. HWC finished on a 6-2 run with field goals from Keller, Neumiller and Faul to make the final score 67-41.

Jeanotte led all players in scoring with 21 points and was joined in double digits by Desjarlais and DeCoteau with 11 each. HWC was led by Neumiller's 19 points, while eighth grader Faul added 10 more.

HWC 71, St. John 54

Boys

Harvey-Wells County put up 40 first half points and limited the St. John three pointers in the second half to seal a 71-54 victory over the Woodchucks in St. John.

Noah Ziegler scored the first five points, and Tallen Thorson added the next four as the Hornets exploded out of the gates, taking an early 9-2 lead. Thorson added a three late in the third, which helped to offset seven points from the Woodchucks' Cashmyn Belgarde as HWC led, 18-10, after one. The Hornets dominated the boards in the first quarter with five offensive putbacks for points.

A 10-2 run to start the second quarter was highlighted by two more offensive putbacks, as the Hornet lead grew to 28-12. Avery Wiliams connected on a three and a deuce, Tyler Swang added four points in a row and Kayl Sieg drained a three from half court, as the Hornet lead grew to 40-18 at halftime.

The Woodchucks got things rolling in the third, with Belgarde hitting for six points and Madden Parisien adding four more as St. John outscored HWC, 13-12. Six Hornets found the scoring column in the third, with Ryan McKinven and Michael Felchle knocking down three-pointers.

Parisien hit two threes and Simon LaRocque added two more in the fourth, as the Woodchucks scored 23 points. Seven Hornets got into the stat book in the final eight minutes, and was highlighted by threes from Ziegler, Teagan Tipton and Ethan Eckart, making the final score 71-54.

The Hornets were led in scoring by Ziegler with 15 points. Also in double digits were Thorson and Swang with 10 each.

St. John was led by Belgarde's 17. He was followed closely by Parisien with 14 and LaRocque with 12.

The win for HWC evens out their record at 3-3 on the season, while St. John drops to 1-3 overall.
