Rough day for M-P-B at U of J Shootout

The University of Jamestown Shootout at Harold Newman Arena didn't come up roses for either of the M-P-B Thunder basketball teams Saturday afternoon, December 16.

Girls' action saw the Thunder fall shot to the Larimore Polar Bears, 45-38, while the Hankinson Pirates cruised in a 54-32 triumph over the M-P-B boys.

The Thunder led by one after the first quarter, 15-14, and the Polar Bears flipped that result to 23-21 at the halftime horn. In the decisive third quarter, Larimore held M-P-B to just three points and went up by 10 to hold off in the final period for the win.

Junior Maddie Gefroh scored 13 points to lead M-P-B, and two players, Alaina Bosche and Kalen Kinzell, scored eight points apiece.

For the Bears, Sadie Aamodt was the game's top scorer with 15, with Micayla Sharp's 13 just behind. Meg Reinhold had a strong supporting effort with nine points for Larimore.

Neither team shot well from the foul line, with the Thunder's 10-for-19 (52.6%) effort outshining a 7-for-17 (41.2%) struggle by the Polar Bears.

M-P-B's boys had an impressive first quarter against the Pirates in taking a 15-14 lead and matching the girls' score, but that was all the magic they could muster as they scored merely 17 points for the remainder of the contest and one free throw in the second quarter.

Raeshaun Earl was the big player on the floor, as the Pirates' sophomore guard went for 26 points. Andrew Jean had 13 and Parker Hubrig seven.

Thunder sophomore Chase Ova was the only M-P-B player to reach double digits, scoring 12.

Following Christmas, the Thunder boys team travels to Bismarck State College for a two-day shootout December 28-29. On the first night, M-P-B plays Division A New Town at 8 p.m., followed by a game with the Richardton-Taylor Raiders the following evening at 5 p.m.
