It was a case of taking what the opposition was giving them.
The Four Winds/Minnewaukan Lady Indians, young but tenacious, put the Carrington Cardinals on the free throw line 18 times in the first leg of their home-and-home Region 2 series at the East Gym Tuesday, December 9.
CHS made them pay, hitting 15 of those shots (12 consecutively to begin the game), and hitting three-pointers at the right times to escape with a 43-39 victory.
The big sequence of the game came in the third quarter, when FW-M went on a 7-0 run to go up by six, 25-19.
Kacie Rexin and Madison Johnson (twice) would bury trifectas on three straight trips down the floor, keying an 11-point spurt of their own and giving Carrington a 30-25 advantage that they would not surrender.
Johnson would finish with a game-high 16 points, and hit five of eight from the foul line down the stretch. Rexin, along with Olivia Threadgold, scored 10 points, and Edyn Hoornaert was the only other Cardinal to score with seven.
Isabel Wendel had nine rebounds for CHS (8-3 overall, 3-2 Region 2. FW-M (4-7, 1-4) was led by eighth grader Suri Gourd with nine points, while Kendra Spotted Wolf had eight.
Up next for CHS is at Northern Cass Tuesday, home with Grafton Thursday and at E-K-M Saturday.
