Harvey-Wells County ran into more stiff competition this week, taking on Our Redeemer's and Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood.

The Hornets continued their improved play, taking down previously unbeaten and eighth- ranked MLS in a close game, and fell to the Knights, which used 11 three-pointers in the 13-point victory over HWC.

HWC 62, MLS 60

Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood (MLS) came from 13 down to take the lead, but Harvey-Wells County regained their composure and captured a 62-60 win over the previously undefeated Mavericks in District 8 boys basketball action in Harvey on Thursday, January 11.

The Mavericks entered the contest unblemished at 6-0, and HWC had not won on their homecourt since the CNDC tournament, but the Hornets were not to be overlooked.

In a very close first quarter, MLS took a 15-10 lead with the help of seven points from Riley Morlock, but HWC answered with a 7-2 finish, including a three at the horn by Jaxon Feist to deadlock the game at 17.

The team traded field goals to start the third, but HWC took a five point lead midway through the second on a field goal from Ryan McKinven and a two-and-one from Kayl Sieg. Two free throws from freshman Eli Undlin and a basket from Grady Nett closed the gap to one, but Tallen Thorson's three moved the Hornet lead back to six at 33-27. Morlock's two-and-one to end the half made the halftime score 33-30.

The Hornets came out of the locker room blazing hot to start the third, as Thorson, Avery Williams and Sieg all connected on long range shots to move the lead to 42-32. The Mavericks slowly chipped away at the lead with three free throws and Undlin's deuce to cut the lead to three. A Feist stop- and-pop from behind the arc propelled the Hornets to a quick 8-0 run, with Thorson knocking down another three to finish the streak. Feist made two of three free throws after being fouled right before the buzzer, and the Hornet lead swelled to 54-41 after three.

With HWC up big with eight minutes to play, MLS went to work and went to work quickly. Grady Nett started the fourth with a deuce and that was followed by a three from Carson Nett. Cristyen Peppard added a field goal and Undlin was good on a two, a three and a two-and-one to finish off a 15-0 run to start the fourth, giving the Mavericks an unlikely 56-54 lead with just 3:08 off the clock.

Sieg calmly sank two free throws to put an end to the run, and settle down the Hornets with a 56-56 tie. Tyler Swang and Williams added field goals late in the game and they were answered by Morlock tying the game at 60. HWC used a nice inbounds pass to Keaton Keller for a 62-60 lead at the one-minute mark and the Hornets held off two Maverick possessions late to seal the win.

The Hornets played inspired defense, with several HWC players getting blocks. Keller swatted away numerous MLS shot attempts and helped keep the momentum with the Hornets. Thorson made three long range shots, and led HWC with 19 points. The Hornets had five other players with seven or more points on the night. Overall, HWC made eight threes but committed 20 turnovers in total.

The Mavericks were led in scoring by Undlin and Morlock, each with 19 points. MLS only committed 10 turnovers and were 16-22 from the free throw line.

With the win, HWC gets their first District 8 win and moved their overall record to 4-6, while the Mavericks dropped their first game of the year and fell to 6-1 overall.

The Knight onslaught of three pointers continued in the third, with Wyatt Weekley connecting on two more. Nolan Schmidt added six points for Our Redeemer's, helping the Knights to a 18-12 quarter advantage and 51-37 lead after three.
