Mehring shoots well in loss to FW-M

If anything, Carrington knows their perimeter shooting duties going forward will be capably handled for the next 3 1/2 seasons.

Freshman Taylen Mehring's 13 points, including four three-point shots, served as a highlight in an otherwise-humbling 87-41 loss to Four Winds-Minnewaukan in Region 2 action from Thursday, January 11 in Minnewaukan.

The Cards, like many teams before them, were unable to handle the Indians' hounding pressure defense, lightning-quick transition game, height and depth.

"We played a pretty good first half until they had a run the last minute and a half of the second quarter," said CHS Coach Jason Otto.

Returning Class B All-State senior forward Deng Deng put his athletic 6'4" frame to good use, hitting from all over the floor and finishing with 34 points for FW-M (7-2, 2-1 Region 2). His younger brother, sophomore Marial, also proved the pipeline of talent is still strong with 11 points, and 12 different players got into the books for the Indians.

Junior guard Josh Bickett hit three treys and ended his night with 11 points, while Owen Hagel had seven for Carrington (1-7, 0-3).

The Cards hit just five two-point field goals in the game, and had to make their living from the outside with eight threes. CHS was effective from the free throw line, going 7-for-10 in defeat.

A scheduled game against Rugby on Monday, January 15, was postponed due to dangerous wind chills and weather conditions.

It doesn't get easier for Carrington this week, as the Devils Lake Firebirds come to town today (January 22) for another Region 2 clash. DLHS scored a 68-66 upset over top-ranked Grafton the same night of the Cards' game with FW-M, and the former Class A program is a force in their own right with a 8-1 record.

This Friday night, the Cards hit the road for a game with Region 1 opponent Northern Cass at Hunter. The Jaguars are currently 9-2 for the year.
