From the Past: Six wrestlers claim titles at region

February 24, 1949

The McHenry High School student association and McHenry community again played host to the Foster County schools in their annual county basketball tournament. The tournament got underway in the McHenry gymnasium Wednesday evening, Feb. 16, with the Foster County schools of Glenfield, Bordulac, Grace City and McHenry participating. In the finals on Friday, McHenry teams come through to win first place in both the boys and girls divisions.

Mrs. R.F. Gilliland entertained Friday, February 18, for her son's first birthday. Guests included Mrs. Robert Baeder and daughter, Mrs. William Kunkel, Mrs. Norton Stangeland and son, Mrs. Arne Boyum and sons, Mrs. Phillip Belanger and son, Mrs. Kenneth Wheeler, and Mrs. J.L. Hendrickson and daughter.

A girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Russell Storhaug at St. Paul, Minnesota, on Feb. 14. The baby was named Carmen Eileen, Mrs. Storhaug is a daughter of Mrs. Mamie Myers of Carrington.

The Monday Bridge Club met at the home of Mrs. C.W. Burnham Monday evening. Prize winners were Mrs. Norman Hanson and Mrs. Guy Cook.

Prize winners were Dr. R.F. Gilland, Mrs. William Kunkel, Frank Johnson, and Mrs. Robert Reimers, when the Sunday Niters met at the R.F. Marcussen home Sunday evening.

At a candlelight service in the Paul Froelich home. Miss Betty Froelich, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Froelich, Carrington, and Roger D. Engberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Engberg, Carrington, were united in marriage Sunday, February 20, 1940 at 7:00 p.m., by Rev. E.E. Lang officiating.

Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Unstad returned Friday evening after spending the week in Minneapolis. While there, they attended the showing of the new Plymouth and DeSoto cars.

February 20, 1974

Officers were elected by Foster County Wildlife Club at a meeting in January. New officers are Don Davis, president; Charles Mehring, vice-president; Mrs. Marvin Hallwachs, secretary-treasurer; Henry Kirchoff, Ed Smith, Wes Miller, Charles Schaack and Charles Mehring board members.

The gasoline shortage created concern for the Carrington school board at their regular monthly meeting last week. After petitioning the State Office of Energy Management , the board was able to replenish dwindling supplies of gas in school tanks with 30,000 gallons.

University of North Dakota has recognized 1,160 students for superior academic achievement during the fall semester. Students from this area include Thomas Aljets, Joel Baldwin, Thomas Beaton, Jim Busch and Dean Rathe, Carrington; Barbara Hoyt , McHenry; Robert Erickson, Kensal; Wayne Goter and Sharon Struxness, Woodworth. Bevely Broschat, Cathay and Jean Neumiller, Sykeston.

Al Larson's Cardinal wrestlers had a "super day," in his words, as they dominated the Region II tournament to repeat as champions. Six cardinals claimed individual titles as the CHS squad out pointed runner-up Devils Lake.

Regional champions from the Cardinal squad are 98 Ken Sebastian, 119 Gary Lemert, 126 Kelly Hagel, 132 Dan Zink, 138 Virgil Purcell and 167 Harley Hallwachs.

Glenfield-Sutton Demons are ranked number one for the District 13 Class B basketball tournament to be held at New Rockford Feb. 25-26-28.

Becky Silkey of Carrington and Paulette Brown of Sykeston have been serving as volunteers on the peer counseling staff of the Concentrated Approach Program at N.D. State University.

February 22, 1999

FFA chapters and 4-H from around the state participated in the annual Carrington FFA Alumni Crops and Livestock contest here Feb. 13.

Carrington's AgGrow Oils is facing a temporary shutdown of it's operating equipment due to continued operational problems. It has been decided to replace the equipment that has been dysfunctional before the new crop is harvested.

Marie Haster, Carrington, won a $200 Selected Gift Album, in the recent "Gone With the Wind" contest at Carrington Super Valu Foods. Haster plans to get a new microwave with her prize winnings.

Michael Munkeby of Carrington is receiving the 4-H Foundation Scholarship, which goes to a current or former 4-H'er and is in honor of John Norgaard and Erwin Klusmann. Munkeby's immediate future plans involve attending NDSU this fall and majoring in pharmacy.

Carrington Health Center Dietary and Activity departments hosted a Valentine Couples dinner on Friday, February 12. Residents and spouses enjoyed shrimp, chicken, twice baked potatoes, mixed vegetables, ice cream with a taste of wine. Valentine queen and king were Mary Koenig and Tony Weld.

A three-game sweep over North Central ended Carrington's girls volleyball season with a 15-16 record and a third place District 5 trophy. The previous season was tough to beat, it was the best season the volleyball team ever had. The team hopes to return next year.

Court options for a city-county court agreement were discussed at an informational meeting with the Carrington City Council. Questions arose when the city decided to look into taking more of the cases currently going into district court. The current agreement, instituted in 1995, was discovered to be invalid since it has not been filed with state officials.

Obituaries - Gertude Rogelstad. 92, New Rockford died February 11. John B. Manz, 83, McHenry died February 14; Henry L. Stenberg, 82, New Rockford died February 12.

Engagements - Tricia Pedersen and Shane Erstad announce their engagement. Tricia graduated from Jamestown College and is a registered nurse at Meritcare Hospital in Fargo. Shane graduated from Jamestown College and is employed by Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center, Jamestown.
