Thunder's season ends at District 2 in qualifying round

M-P-B's aim of getting back to the state tournament came to a premature end at the District 2 Tournament in Jamestown.

The Thunder boys took losses of 55-46 to LaMoure/Litchville-Marion on Friday, February 23, and Linton-HMB, 60-44 last Tuesday, to finish their 2023-24 season with a 12-10 record.

In between, Coach Bob Young's boys stayed afloat with a 61-37 win over Kidder County in loser-out play Monday, February 26.

Terek Kinzell was the only double-figure scorer in the opening loss to the Loboes, scoring 19 for the contest. L-L-M (11-9) had three players score at least 10, led by 18 from Max Musland. Blase Isaacson also scored 15 and Owen Lesko 14 in their victory.

M-P-B got nine points and eight rebounds courtesy of Gage Magstadt in the opener.

Rylen Wick went off for a 25-point, 10-rebound double-double in the elimination game against the Wolves. Magstadt also was hot from the field with a 17-point afternoon, to go along with nine boards and two blocks.

Kidder County's season ended at 2-20, and they were led by 10 points from Grady Larson.

The Thunder would meet up with Linton-HMB, rated ninth in the final Division B poll, in the Region 1 qualifier. M-P-B kept up with the Lions in the first quarter, but a four-point second period spelled doom for their chances to keep up with the Linton offense.

Wick would put an end to his fabulous 1,500-plus point career as a Thunder standout with 14 points. Magstadt pulled down 12 rebounds to go along with his eight-point showing.

Chase Ova had three assists and three steals in the season-ending defeat.

The Lions (18-4) rode their three-headed beast with Gentry Richter's 18 points paving the way. Just behind him with 16 and 15 points were Jace Jochim (also with 10 rebounds and three steals) and Kashton Moser.

In the other qualifier, L-L-M withstood a spirited effort from South Border in a 44-42 win, while top seed E-K-M easily outdistanced Ellendale, 72-45, for the District 2 championship.

In District 2 postseason awards, Wick was the lone Thunder player named to the regular season All-District team. L-L-M's Max Musland was the Senior Athlete of the Year, while Kevin Strobel of E-K-M got Coach of the Year.
