Appealing to local public officials to help control the distribution of obscene comic books to children under 18, Attorney General Wallace E. Warner said Monday his office does not plan to act as a “book burner.”
Carrington’s grand old man, David Graham, is 92 years old and still active, in good health and high spirits. It is almost an understatement to call him an old man, for he carries his age better than most men.
More than $15,000 in prizes will be awards to residents in this region who are served by Red Owl stores in the “Name the Red Owl and Rhyme It” contest announced this week.
The contest advertised as the biggest and easiest event of its kind ever conducted in Ted Owl’s nine-state territory, is open to everyone said manager R.F. Marcussen.
Rolling a score of 817, Tom Cousins of Carrington topped the entries in the Fargo Forum bowling tournament last Sunday. He was one of 18 Carrington bowlers taking part in the Forum classic on the Kossick Lanes in Moorhead, and in Fargo.
Attending from Carrington were Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Winterer, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Stitzer, Mr and Mrs. Ted Berglund, Mr. and Mrs. Bob O’Neill, Mr and Mrs. R.F. Marcussen, A.G. Schultz, Jack Sheets, Orville and Joe Laber, Hank Healey, Leo Steinman, Steve Waenaas, Ed Riedesel, Gordon Stene, Russelll McCrea, Hank Getty and Quentin Jensen.
Marion High School, in its first state tournament, came from behind here Saturday evening to take the coveted crown, defeating Wheatland, in the final game of the state girls’ basketball tournament played here Thursday, Friday and Saturday on the Carrington floor.
Mrs. Ivan Alfstad entertained Tuesday in honor of Darwin on his 5th birthday. Guests were five boys and their mothers.

Most Glenfield residents will enjoy the advantages of both city sewer and water by end of coming summer if all goes according to the city council’s plan.
A group of Carrington men met at the state capitol Thursday with representatives of state agencies to discuss revival of a plan to increase the height of the Dover (Wyard) Dam west of Carrington.
Red Skytland, Carrington, received the Robertson Companies lumberyard managers “Award of Excellence” at a Robertson Companies managers’ meeting held at Grand Forks.
The Carrington FFA crops judging team received a gold plaque for their performance at the state contest at Valley City in connection with the Valley City Winter Show.
Mr. and Mrs. Darold Anderson, Glenfield, announce the engagement of their daughter, Muriel Vicki to Richard L. McCorkle, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.P. McCorkle, Ahmadi, Kuwait. A fall wedding is planned.
The engagement of Vivian Catherine Mueller to Tom Duursma is announced by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alphonse Mueller, Williston, Tom is son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Duursma, St., Carrington. The wedding is set for May 4, in Williston.
Mr. and Mrs. Ted Fandrich announce the engagement of their daughter, Becky, to Steve Heiden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Heiden, Carrington. An Aug.10 wedding is planned.
Mr. and Mrs. Gary P. King, Grand Forks, announce the engagement of their daughter, Kathie Cheryl, to Jim W. Bronaugh son of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Bronaugh, Carrington. The wedding is planned for June 1 at Calvary Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.
A surprise birthday party was held at the J. Maurice Carr home, Bordulac, Monday night for Stephen Lamm, celebrating his birthday. Mrs. Carr baked the cake and lunch was served.

Longtime Carrington Public Works Superintendent Dale Townsend told the City Council he plans to retire within the year. He has served as superintendent for 32 years.
School-to-work program is now in the planning stages at Carrington High School. Carrington is part of a five-school consortium including Kensal, New Rockford, Sheyenne and Sykeston which is working on a federal grant to fund the program.
Two Carrington High School students, Adam Harvala and Matt Metzger, were selected to the North Dakota Class B Academic All State Silver Team. Nominations are based on two factors - cumulative GPA and ACT scores.
New Arrivals - Abigail Lynn was born to Bobbi and Jason Jarrett, Carrington on March 8, 7 pounds 15.6 ounces.
Obituaries - Joyce Geier, 68, Heaton died March 9, 1999; Donald W. Lester, 72, Glenfield died Wednesday, March 3, 1999.
Four new members were initiated into the American Legion Auxiliary at the March meeting, they included Julie Scheen, Kathy Cabler, Sharon Hewitt and Dorothy Fenske.
Fun with a learning purpose drew an enthusiastic crowd of parents and kids alike at the third annual Bingo for Books event held March 4 in the Carrington Elementary School gym.
