From the Past: Retail stores expand hours on Saturdays

75 Years Ago

March 31, 1949

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Beach left Monday for Havre, Montana, upon receiving information that their son, Marvin, had been seriously injured. They were told that he had been pinned under a Caterpillar tractor, which he was operating, when it overturned. He suffered fractures in both legs and other injuries.

Retail stores in Carrington will stay open until 9 p.m. Saturday evenings, beginning April 16, and that schedule will be observed until further notice. It was decided at a meeting of a joint Kiwanis-Junior Chamber of Commerce committee meeting Monday evening.

Wesley Johnson, 28, an employee of Tri-County Electric Cooperative, Carrington, was killed instantly Wednesday forenoon in an accident 11 miles south of Fessenden. He was riding in a Jeep with Willard Giles, and in the fog they failed to see a truck ahead of them and crashed into it.

Mr. and Mrs. Jack Duff, Brantford, are the proud parents of a boy born Friday morning at New Rockford.

The Sykeston Women’s Club, elected officers at their March meeting. All officers were re-elected, namely, president Mrs. John Nelson; vice-president O.J. Luredly; secretary Mrs. M.E. Kremer and treasurer Mrs. Forrest Daniel.

The McHenry Fire Department installed a new fire siren this past week. It is not loud enough so they are returning it for a larger one. Cherry Lake, Florence, Paradise, and McHenry townships are all giving donations to this fire department to assist them in getting all their new equipment.

Mrs. Vernon Pederson entertained 12 girls in honor of Mary Kay’s fifth birthday Saturday. The Easter motif was carried out and games were played.

March 27, 1974

A radiant Miss Carrington, Neta McMonagle, took the short walk down the runway after being crowned by her predecessor, Lori Paulson, Saturday evening. The Miss Carrington pageant drew approximately 650 people to the CHS gym.

New business people in Carrington are Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Ferguson, who will open a shoe, tarp and canvas repair shop here. The business, located in the basement of Terrance Lounge, will open Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson and children were moving to Carrington from Dawson, Minn., this week.

When the annual township election was held in Rose Hill township. Mrs. Jack Rosenau was elected clerk to replace Harry Black. William Zink was re-elected to the Rose Hill board of supervisors.

Two Carrington students at N.D. State University have been given student teaching assignments for the spring quarter. Kathryn Beck is student teaching in Spanish at South High School, Fargo. She is daughter of Mrs. Magnus Johnson. Dennis Neumiller is student teaching in biology at North High, Fargo. He is son of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Neumiller.

Local students listed on the Valley City SC Dean’s List for the winter quarter are Richard Erickson, Bordulac, and Bill Cody and Nadine Linderman, both of Carrington.

Robert Nystuen of Carrington was elected treasurer of the NDSU Alpha Gamma Rho chapter of the national social agriculture fraternity. Robert, a junior majoring in agricultural economics, is son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Nystuen.

March 29, 1999

Four medical students from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Grand Forks will be coming to Carrington next month for training experience at Carrington Health Center. The students are Dawn Mersch, Brian Hebert, Eric Risovi and John Zurn.

Melissa Munkeby, a senior at Carrington High School, was crowned Miss Prairie Rose 1999 at the Williston International Dance Challenge held March 19.

Arnie Reimers is retiring after 41 years employed with Dakota Central Telephone Co-op which provided phone service to small towns and rural areas.

Brad Turner, local Bremer Bank President, is pleased to announce Joe Bitz, Personal Banker and INVEST platform representative, and Dan Liberda, Insurance Sales Manager Bremer, Carrington as 1998 annual Premier Performance winners.

Engagements - Saundra Dietz and Chad Munson, together with their children, Jesse Dietz and Hunter Munson, announce their engagement. Parents are Danny and Sharon Buckle, Twin Valley, Minn., and Kenneth and Barbara Munson, New Rockford.

Renae Filler and Mark Johnson announce their engagement and forthcoming marriage. The ceremony will be held May 1 at Trinity Lutheran Church.

New Arrivals - Keaton Edward Mack, January 27 to Chris and Lisa Mack, Willison. Grandparents are Barb Mack, Carrington; Bob and Donna Mack, Kensal; Darold and Teresa Kracht, Kensal.

Obituaries - Shelia Krueger, 50, Manfred, died Thursday, March 18 at her home. Louis Neva, 80, Kensal, died Friday, March 10 at the Veterans Hospital in Fargo.

Sherman Sylling, former Superintendent of schools at Grace City and Fessenden and now Watford City Public School, has been named the new executive secretary of the NDHSAA and will take the reins at its Valley City office July 1.
