Three Carrington archers earned a trip to the NASP Western National Tournament in Sandy, Utah on April 26 and 27.
Thirty local archers earned the opportunity to compete at the North Dakota State NASP Tournament in Minot on March 15 and 16, with their flights in both bullseye and 3D taking place on Friday night.
The Cardinals' pride and joy was fifth grader Emma Mertz. She excelled in both bullseye and 3D competition, finishing in second place among elementary girls in bullseye and fifth place in 3D.
Mertz, a fifth grader at Carrington Elementary, finished in 31st place overall out of 421 girls competing in the bullseye tournament. She beat each of her personal best scores by six points that day, from 265 to 271 in bullseye and from 247 to 253 in 3D.
Mertz also made the Elementary All-State Team. All elementary archers who had scored at least a 250 in any regular season tournament this year had an opportunity to make the team. All shot one round of five arrows, and the archers with the 12 highest scores were named to the North Dakota All-State Archery Team. This is her first year competing in archery.
Meanwhile, in the 3D tournament, two experienced Cardinal archers had their day to shine.
Senior Joe Lindberg shot a 275 and came in ninth place among high school boys in the 3D tournament.
He shot his personal best score in both bullseye and 3D last weekend, capping off six years of commitment to the CHS archery team. Lindberg will make his first appearance at the national tournament in April.
Sophomore Nela Mc-Kibben finished in eighth place among high school girls in the 3D tournament. She led the Cardinal archers in scoring with a 276, and improved her personal best score by 14 points. She will also make her first appearance on the national stage in April.
Two Kensal archers punched their ticket to the NASP Western National Tournament.
Cole Wessels earned 10th place in middle school boys' bullseye with a 273.
Jesse Wessels finished in seventh place among middle school boys in the 3D competition with a score of 277.
Jesse Wessels also qualified to shoot for a spot on the All-State Team. Any middle school archer can qualify by scoring at least a 275 in any regular season tournament.
A total of 887 archers from 39 schools competed in the North Dakota State NASP Tournament. In the 3D tournament, there were 736 archers competing from 36 schools.
