Big inning issues doom CHS

In almost the blink of an eye, it all went to a bad place for the Carrington baseball team.

Four innings had elapsed between the Cards and the visiting May-Port-CG Patriots, with both teams getting two-run frames to settle into a 2-2 deadlock.

But a few hit batters, hits and errors later, things got out of reach, and the Pats scored nine times in the next two innings to shellshock the host team, 11-2, in the "official" home opener at City Park Monday night, April 22.

Ethan Roller got the start for Carrington, and gave up a seeing-eye bloop single off the bat of the Patriots' Aaden Aarsvold in the top of the second for their first two runs.

In the third inning, CHS got their equalizers off MPCG starter Marshall Kloster, starting with a one-out single from Tate Wolsky. A four-pitch walk to Josh Bickett followed, and Grady Shipman hit a sharp single through the hole at second to score Wolsky and make it 2-1. Corbin Clifton then drove in Bickett with a groundout to knot the game at two all.

Roller's evening came to an end in the fifth, thanks to a leadoff hit batter, a walk, fielders' choice and another hit batter. Two of those runs came around to score, and Wolsky, who came on in relief, didn't fare much better with two more plunks, an error and a two-run single by the Pats' Samuel Weaver. Once the dust cleared, it was 7-2 in favor of MPCG after five.

The Pats poured on four more runs in the sixth. Two walks, an error and back-to-back doubles by Sawyer McGillis and Kloster punctuated the offensive night for May-Port-CG.

It was more than enough run support for Kloster, who threw a complete game four-hitter with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Jacob Boeshans came in to pitch the top of the seventh for the Cards, and did very well in striking out two of his four batters faced.

Clifton had a double for Carrington, and Jake Otto accounted for the other hit in the Cards' scorebook.

Connor Dockter had two hits for MPCG, as did Kloster, and Easton Hanson also had a hit for the Patriots in the win. Kaden Hogfoss was a force on the basepaths, scoring twice and stealing three bases.

LaMoure/L-M 12, Carrington 8

A bit of coordination in the scheduling department allowed the Cards and the LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Loboes to get in their Region 3 game in New Rockford the next day.

Since the Loboes were slated to play the SNR Black Sox at Jim Johnson Park that day anyway, the Cards were able to flip their rescheduled April 22 date up north to the 23rd so they could play May-Port-CG in the original game day slot.

The 12-8 loss Carrington took to the Loboes showed that Region 3 could be anyone's for the taking, if they can manage to fix their defensive woes.

For the second straight game, unearned runs were the decisive factor, as six such scores came across for L-L-M in the four-run defeat.

Shipman, the Cards' returning All-State selection, had his biggest game at the plate thus far this spring, hitting a triple and two doubles, and finishing with five RBIs.

Bickett had a hit and three runs scored in the loss to the defending region champion Loboes (3-3, 1-2 Region 3). Max Whitman and Boeshans finished two hits, and additional hits came from Roller (double), Owen Hagel and Otto.

Shipman took the loss in relief of Bickett, giving up seven runs (four earned) in 2 1/3 innings. Bickett tossed the first four frames for CHS.

In spite of his struggles, Max Musland got the win for the Loboes with six earned runs allowed in six innings. He, along with Damian Carlson, had two hits in L-L-M's books.

With the loss, the Cards fell to 2-4 and 1-1 in regional play.

Today (April 29), Carrington takes on South Border in Wishek, a rescheduled game from the intended season opener on April 9. On Tuesday, Carrington hosts SNR starting at 3 p.m., and HWC Friday at 4:30. The South Border and SNR games are Region 3 contests.

Saturday, the locals host Nelson County/Midkota in a matchup of former regional foes, starting at 12 noon. The Chargers moved from Region 3 to Region 2 this season.
