CHS' Johnson breaks school mile record again; Cards also at Lisbon -

A small squad for the Carrington Cardinals met up with the best of eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota at the Fargo Elite Meet, held at the Terrence Dahl and Donna Beres Track Complex on the NDSU campus Saturday, April 20.

And, for the second time in an eight-day span, CHS senior middle distance runner Madison Johnson is in the spotlight.

Johnson broke her own school record in the 1,600-meter run set the previous week in Grafton by four-hundredths short of three full seconds, crossing the line in third place with a time of 5:10.40.

Remarkably, she was nearly six seconds behind winner Eva Selensky of Bismarck St. Mary's (5:04.49), and Reagan Berg of Valley City (5:08.13) was second.

Kenadie Pazdernik bested her state-qualifying seeding in the 3,200-meter run, nearly cracking the 12-minute barrier in 12:00.71 and coming across in seventh place.

The Cards' other points came from Kacie Rexin, whose heave of 103 feet, 8 3/4 inches earned her a seventh place effort in the javelin.

Carrington placed in 25th with 10 points. Central Cass edged Shanley for the overall meet title with 50 points to the Deacons' 48.

The boys' team finished in a three-way tie for 26th place with five points, with the Red River Roughriders scoring 82 points for the win to surge past runner-up Fargo South.

The Cards nearly had another qualification in the 4x200-meter relay, as the foursome of Peyton Harrington, Ryder Bickett, McKade Zink and Jaxon Schaefer was just .59 away from making the state field with a 1:35.83 time.

HWC had two athletes at the meet. Tallen Thorson took the 110-meter hurdle title (15.07), and placed second in the 300 hurdles in 41.42. Addisyn Faul was sixth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.86.

Last Monday, the Cards competed at the Lisbon American Legion Meet, and got two new qualifications, both in the relay races.

The girls' 4x800 team featuring Marah Johnson, Pazdernik, Edyn Hoornaert and Madison Johnson easily made the state roster with a 9:53.29 time.

For the boys, the 4x100 relay also qualified with a 45.18 clocking. Team members were Zink, Logan Weninger, Schaefer and Bickett.

The same group knocked on the door once again in the 4x200, this time finishing an excruciatingly-cruel .01 second off meeting the standard of 1:35.24.

Bickett improved his standing among the statewide javelin throwers with a season-best toss of 169'8".

The CHS girls finished third behind Wahpeton and Lisbon with 88 points, and the boys (55 points) came in sixth, with the host Broncos taking the runaway victory by scoring 152.5. Results from the Fargo and Lisbon meets are as follows:
