From the Past: Perch released at Lake Hiawatha

75 Years Ago

May 12, 1949

Foster County will be represented at the state dairy show to be held in Jamestown in September by a Foster County Dairy Queen who will be selected in Carrington on Dairy Day, June 22, sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce.

G. H. Gwynn of Carrington has been presented with a “Safe Driving Recognition Award” by the Standard Oil Company in recognition of the fact that no accidents are chargeable against his record as a driver for a period of twenty consecutive years.

Funeral services were held in St. Louis, Missouri on Wednesday, May 4th for the reburial of Sgt. Merle Roush, son of Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Roush and brother of Mrs. Frank Pergande, Carrington. Sgt. Roush has been previously buried in Holland. His widow and one child live in St. Louis.

Another reburial service was held in Maxwell, Nebraska, for Lt. John Haba, son of Mrs. Martin Haba of Grandview, Wash., and brother of Mrs. Anton Waliser, Carrington.

Taking advantage of a shift in the Carrington line-up in the seventh inning, Woodworth came from behind to take a 6 to 4 victory from Carrington in a 10-inning game played on the Woodworth diamond last Sunday.

A twenty-fifth wedding anniversary celebration was held Sunday, May 9, in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hoyt, McHenry, at their farm home.

A large group of friends and relatives gathered at the Fritz Carr home last Thursday afternoon, honoring Mrs. Jack Bort at a bridal shower. She received many gifts.

A Mother’s Day party was enjoyed at Rose Hill No. 4 last Friday afternoon. A program was presented and the boys of the school served lunch to the guests.

Miss Nelda Walen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Walen and Donald E. Posey, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Posey, were married on Sunday, May 8, at a nine o’clock morning ceremony in the Glenfield Lutheran Church.

May 8, 1974

Carrington High School music students attended the state solo ensemble music contest at Bismarck Junior College April 26. The following solo and ensembles received “Star” ratings: Kim Goheen - trombone solo; Dawn Hollatz - alto sax solo; Crystal Hollatz - E flat clarinet solo; Jenny Ringerud - clarinet solo; mixed vocal ensemble and clarinet choir.

Frank Sobolik, assistant agronomist at Carrington Branch Irrigation Station, has been named principal staff member of Northwest Saline Control Association, serving Divide and Williams counties.

The 1974 Kiwanis Senior band award was given to drummer Dan Zink, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Zink of Carrington, at the spring band concert Tuesday night. John Speidel, president of Carrington Kiwanis Club, made the presentation.

Dan Steinman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Steinman, received the Sally Hanson Memorial Band Camp scholarship presented by Carrington Band Mothers Club.

Christine Schaack, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Schaack, and Kathleen Sondag, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Edward Sondag, both of Sykeston are co-valedictorians of the 1974 graduating class of Sykeston High School.

Robert Miller, Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Miller, Sr., Heaton and Merlin Neumiller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Neumiller, Sykeston, are co-salutatorians.

Cheryl Ellingson and Kevin Pedersen have been named honor students of the graduating class of 1974 of Glenfield-Sutton High School.

Debra Gussiaas and Greg Held from Carrington were awarded degree at commencement ceremonies at Concordia College, Moorhead, Sunday, where both graduated with honors

Chosen to represent Sykeston at Boys State are Neal Hammes and Robert Neumiller, sons of Mr. and Mrs. John Hammes and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Neumiller.

There have been 6,500 yellow perch released in Sykeston’s Lake Hiawatha. North Dakota Game and Fish netted and transferred from the other populated Red Willow Lake near Binford.

The North Dakota Hall of Fame (NDCHF) has received a major gift of memorabilia from Eddy County rancher James Langley. Langley, has collected more than 150 saddles over a 40 year period. He recently allowed NDCHF officials to select saddles representing the history of North Dakota and the ranching industry.

Ed Suckut, Bowdon, caught a big northern at Round Lake near Pettibone recently. It measured 42½ inches long and weighed at 16¼ pounds.

Carrington High School have three girls qualify for the State Track Meet in the shot put. They are Lynn Swanson, Tara Copenhaver and Ann Johnson. Johnson and Coperhaver have also qualified in the discus.

Area Engagements - Kristi Neis and Eric Buseman together with their parents, Jerome and Monica Neis, Carrington and Darla Busemn, Parker, S.D. announce their engagement. A June 12 wedding is planned at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Carrington.

Allen and Lois Zander, New Rockford, formerly of Cathay, announce the engagement of their daughter, Deanna Marie, to Robert Paul, son of Richard and Cindy Zumbaum of Goodrich.

Paul and Gayle Soderquist of Carrington announce the engagement of their daughter, Michael Soderquist to Shannon Charles, son of Rhonda and Mitch Charles of Bordulac.

Area births - Zachary James was born on April 24, at Carrington Health Center to Brenda and Brian Magnuson. He weighed 6 pounds, 7½ ounces.

Peggy Guthmiller and Ron Dockter, Carrington, are the parents of a baby girl, Shawna Lee Dockter, born Tuesday, April 27 at Carrington Health Center. She weighed 6 pounds, 6.6 ounces.
