From the Past: Braaten named head girls' coach

May 26, 1949

Six boys from Carrington High School received placings at the district track meet held at Devils Lake last Saturday, Ed Reisnour took first place in pole vault and Donald Theis placed second in the half mile run. Alan Willyard took fourth place in the 220-yard run and he also placed fourth in the broad jump. In low hurdles, Maurice Zink was fourth, and in the pole vault Neis Erstad tied for fourth place and Matt Fruhwirth took fourth place in the mile run.

O. W. Klindworth, proprietor of Klindworth Seed Farms, said the first aerial spraying was done Friday on 280 acres which he has seeded of hard wheat in the Wimbledon vicinity. Three days later several planes from here flew over the area and noticed very satisfactory results. The spraying was done by the Central Air Service of Carrington. Klindworth declares the results demonstrate the value of early spraying.

Eldo E. Lee, Carrington contractor, was the successful bidder for the erection of a hog barn at the fairgrounds, his bid being accepted by the county commissioners in session Monday evening.

Principal speaker at the commencement exercises of the Bordulac High School on Friday, May 27th, will be Judge James Morris, a member of the North Dakota Supreme Court. Mr. Morris is formerly of the Bordulac community, having graduated from the eighth grade in Bordulac in 1908.

Included in the graduating class are Daniel Murphy as valedictorian, Laverne Zink as salutatorian. Others graduating included Orris Carr, Janet Linde and Edwin Doeling. Louis V. Lund is superintendent of schools there.

Donald A. Hess was elected president of the Carrington Junior Chamber of Commerce at the annual business meeting last Thursday night. He succeeds Jud Tracy, who was recently elected national director of the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce.

May 22, 1974

Dennis Swanson of Carrington, a freshman at Lake Region Junior College, broke the MonDak Conference and LRJC school long jump with a lead of 22’ 0”. The former LRJC school record was 21’ 10 ¼” held by Kent Tesch of Cathay (1971).

Donetta Black of Grace City, Bobbie Jo O’Neill of Woodworth and Andrew R. Caylor were awarded diplomas as associates at graduation ceremonies at Bismarck Junior College May 15.

Thomas Beck of Carrington and Linda Schroeder of Bordulac have been initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, a national scholastic honorary society at NDSU.

Loretta M. Carr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Maurice Carr, Bordulac, has been awarded a Frank and Hattie Helmes Memorial Scholarship according to the office of Student Financial Aids of Valley City State College.

Kenrad Pederson of Carrington was among seniors who graduated with honors from Dakota Wesleyan University, Mitchell, S.D., Sunday.

Reva J. Palmer of Glenfield will be among students who will be awarded degrees at Mayville State College May 24. She will be awarded a degree of Bachelor of Science.

Two girls have been chosen to represent McHenry community at Girls State starting June 3. The girls are Wanda, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Stage, and Laurie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marlin Erickson.

Joan Semmens was a hostess at a bridal shower for Mary Neumiller at the Laverne Semmens home Thursday, Jane Neumiller assisted Joan in serving. The wedding of Mary Neumiller and John Williams is planned for June.

Andy Braaten was named head girls’ basketball coach by the Carrington School Board at last weeks meeting.

The Carrington City Council gave the proposed 18-hole golf course project a boost when it approved a $150,000 grant to help pay for it at their monthly meeting last Monday, May 10. The money will come from the Jobs Development Authority grant.

Two schools will hold graduation this week. Kensal seniors will graduate on Friday, May 21. Honor students are DeAnn Mack, valedictorian and co-salutatorians Jennifer Carlson and Ryan Spitzer. Sykeston graduation is set for Sunday, May 23. Sondra Huss is valedictorian and Amber Bursau as salutatorian.

Carrington Chamber Ambassadors paid a recent visit to the Prairie

Inn Restaurant welcoming new owners Eva and Curtis Burnham, who purchased the restaurant from long time owner, Linda Butts.

Engagements - Wes and Lori Parson, McHenry, are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Codi Lynn to Daron Lacina, son of Mary Johnson, LaMoure, and Jim Lacina, Forman.

New Arrivals - a baby girl, Mariah Fay, was born on May 11 at the Carrington Health Center to LuAnn and Troy Alderman, New Rockford. A baby girl, Cassidy Marie, was born May 5, to Holly Robinson and Jeremy Will, Carrington.

Obituaries - Olga Hart, 81, Carrington died Thursday, May 6 at Golden Acres Manor; Carl M. Gunderson, 96, Carrington, died Saturday, May 8 at Golden Acres Manor.

Those receiving the Rite of Confirmation at Kvernes Lutheran Church, rural Carrington on Sunday, May 2 with Rev. Charles Ellefson officiating, were: Kenneth Anderson, son of Gary and Kathy Anderson and Matthew Swanson, son of Dennis and Mary Swanson.

Ann Hoffert recently traveled to Madison, Va, to accept a Partner in Quality Award, presented by Plow and Hearth catalog, a national outlet that has featured her national product

from Pipestem Creek, for the past six years.
