Going the distance

Johnson sets school 800 record at HWC Invitational; now holds CHS standards in three longest races -

In this, her final season on the track as a Cardinal, Madison Johnson has come into her own and established herself as one of the program's legends.

Now, it just remains to be seen if those blistering numbers on the stopwatch translate to individual or team glory at the state meet this upcoming Thursday-Saturday in Bismarck.

Johnson broke the CHS 800-meter record with a 2:19.34 time at the HWC Invitational in Fessenden Saturday, May 11, the fourth time this spring that she has achieved the top spot on the red shields above the entrance of the West Gym.

Her latest record-breaker knocked Abigail Jarrett's 2:19.91 set in 2017 from the books. She also broke the 3,200 and 1,600 (twice) earlier this season.

Johnson would also add another potential event at the 701 Apparel Meet in Jamestown on May 10, qualifying for the 400-meter run in 1:01.45.

At the moment, per the rankings at athletic.net for Class B, Johnson has the top times in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200, and teammate Kenadie Pazdernik is number two for the 1,600 and 3,200. The 4x800-meter relay team of the Johnson sisters (Madison and Marah), along with Pazdernik and Edyn Hoornaert, also occupies the top Class B seed.

Johnson's 800-meter mastery wasn't the only record to be achieved in the week's schedule, as junior Mercedes Lura matched her own 2022 standard in the pole vault in Jamestown with a 10'0" clearance.

Lura would put her sprint speed on display in Fessenden, qualifying for state in the 100-meter dash with a 12.98 time.

Jamestown highlights also included a career-best toss from junior Ryder Bickett in the javelin, as his 184'6" effort put him at the top of the Class B leaderboard. Also in Jamestown, senior Jaxon Schaefer qualified in the 200 (23.05), as did the boys' 4x100 team of Peyton Harrington, Ryder Bickett, Paxton Harrington and McKade Zink.

At Fessenden, the boys' 4x400 team made the state field, with the Harrington brothers, Ryder Bickett and cousin Josh Bickett (3:36.24) hitting the qualifying time on the nose.

The M-P-B Thunder, competing at the 701 Apparel meet, had one event champion in Mark Thomas. The senior took the 110-meter hurdles (16.59) and was fourth with an 11.67 in the 100.

Girls' performers for the Thunder included Savannah Reister (fourth, 100 hurdles; seventh, 100), Samantha Reister (seventh, 300 hurdles) and fourth place finishes by the 4x200 and 4x400 girls' relays.

CHS (Jamestown, Fessenden) and M-P-B (Jamestown) results from the meets are as follows:
