Flowers bring smiles, learning to third grade

The Carrington Runnings store, Carrington Garden Club members, and Foster County Extension staff recently combined resources and talents to teach third grade students about gardening.

Every student had the opportunity to pot their own flowers, which they could take home and grow during summer.

The Runnings store generously donated potting soil, planting containers and bedding plants to the event.

Store manager Rad Nicholson expressed his enthusiasm saying, "This is an excellent program to capture the interest of youth and get them started gardening. I hope that the participants will develop a conservation mindset as they see how plants fit into the environment."

Garden Club member and organizer Karen Evans explained, "The purposes of the project are to inspire and encourage young people to love and care for the land and to enjoy its beauty and bounty. Hopefully, the experience will inspire students to give back in meaningful ways in the future, spreading the joy of gardening to others."

Other Carrington Garden Club volunteers who assisted in the project were Jane Lura and Illa Zink.

During the activity, Extension agent Jeff Gale visited with students about the importance of soil, highlighting the need to protect the soil from erosion. Gale also told the young people about the pumpkin contest that will be held in Foster County this summer.

Gale remarked on the program, stating, "This activity couldn't have come at a better time. It's fun seeing the pride of the students as they carry home their potted flowers." He added, "I'm truly grateful for the support of Runnings and the Carrington Garden Club, without which this wouldn't have been possible."
