CHS girls take South Central crown

Boys finish in fourth place; earn several new state entrants -

The second-to-last chapter in what Carrington hopes will be a storybook finish to their track season for 2024 was written at the Starion Sports Complex in Mandan on May 17.

The Cardinal girls had a back-and-forth race for the team crown with Shiloh Christian, and ultimately came home with the South Central Region championship with a 190-point performance to the Skyhawks' 161.

Regional competition is the best time for North Dakota squads to get those last few qualification slots and relay alternates in, and on that front, the Cards were very successful.

New qualifiers at the meet included Isabel Wendel in both the 100 and 300-meter hurdles, with seventh grader Mya Neis also taking a 100 hurdle slot. Marah Johnson became the third qualifier in the 800-meter run, as did Macy Fiebiger in the 3,200.

In the field events, Jazmyn Ybarra was second in the pole vault, and Olivia Threadgold took third in the discus to qualify for state.

Mercedes Lura added the 200-meter dash to her state event possibilities, and Aniston Hoornaert got a slot as one of the options for both the winning 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

On the track, Madison Johnson was a double winner in the 800 and 1,600-meter runs, and Kenadie Pazdernik took the 3,200 victory.

The boys, with 102.5 points, took fourth behind region champion Hazen's strong performance in the sprints and throwing events. The Bison scored 151 to fend off the Central McLean Cougars in second (138) and Standing Rock (123) for third place.

In his first time ever running the event, senior Logan Weninger took the South Central title in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.34 seconds, and also won the 300 hurdle event. He hopes to be able to run a full slate of events in the state meet after being sidelined for most of the season with hamstring issues.

Jaxon Schaefer took the pole vault event crown with an 11'6" clearance, also qualifying for state.

Other new qualifiers for the Cardinal boys' squad included Peyton Harrington (second, 300 hurdles), and Josh Bickett in the 4x200 relay.
