From the Past: Kutz wins American Legion Derby

75 Years Ago

June 9, 1949

Three students from this area were among those graduated this week from the senior class of Jamestown College. Natalie Knott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Knott, and Alice Mae Reimers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. F. Reimers, both of Carrington, and Betty Lou Thompson, Glenfield, were the graduates.

Showing the last time tonight at the Grand Theatre is Sonja Heinle in “The Countess of Monte Cristo.” Friday and Saturday there is a double feature, “Rusty Leads the Way” and “Singing Spurs.”

New officers were installed at the meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. R.H. Kapitan is the new president of the unit. Other new officers are Mrs. Emanual Bauer, secretary; Mrs. Vernon Pederson, historian; and Mrs. John Albus, sergeant-at-arms. Re-elected to their offices were Mrs. Bernard Schroeder, vice president; Mrs. N.A. Graves, Jr., treasurer; and Mrs. George Swanson, chaplain.

Five 4-H clubs in the county have named candidates to compete for the honor of Foster County Dairy Queen, Luverne Radke, committee chairman, has announced. They are Donna Lyman, Grace City Livestock; Doris March, Melville Beef; Inez Nystaed, Rose-Haven Variety; Margaret Wright, Grace City Livewires; and Marilyn Zink, Bordulac Busy Bees.

Graduation exercises were held Friday evening, June 3, at the Cathay schoolhouse. Members of the class were: Gene Neumiller, Carol Riedesel, Alvin Dietz, Oliver Retzlaff and Gerald Hagemeister.

A large number of friends attended the community dance at Bordulac for Mrs. Franz Lamm who has been ill the past months in Trinity Hospital in Jamestown.

June 2, a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Edinger, Carrington, and on June 6, a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. George Rotz, Carrington.

50 Years Ago

June 5, 1974

Shades of the past were present at the Carrington Kiwanis Club meeting last week. The Kiwanians heard an enthusiastic description of area history and a wagon train, which will recreate history. Guests of the meeting were Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Young and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bradley, who are associated with Fort Seward, Inc., of Jamestown.

Prof. Lush, a native of New Rockford, will be the evangelist for revival services to be held in the Carrington Church of the Nazarene starting Wednesday evening, June 12 and running through Sunday, June 16.

Marvin D. Stockert, formerly of Bismarck, has been named manager of Gate City Savings and Loan in Carrington. He replaces Robert Forbes, who has been named head of the association’s office at Minot.

The Carrington area likely saw a first last week. That was grain seeding from the air. Working out of Matheny Field, a single plane sowed 600 acres of hard wheat in a field farmed by Steve Reimers southeast of Carrington. The pilot, Bob Woods of Grand Forks, began late Thursday afternoon and seeded until Friday afternoon before flying off to other seedling and spraying commitments.

Dakota Winter and rider, Dean Kutz, won the American Legion Derby run at Aberdeen May 27.

Craig Penas accounted for all four of Carrington’s points at the state Class A track meet at Wahpeton Saturday. The Cardinal speedster placed third in the 100-yard dash and fifth in the 220.

Janelle Hagel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Hagel, Carrington, sophomore at Sheyenne River Academy, Harvey, completed another year of high school with a straight A scholastic average.

June 7, 1999

The $10.5 million expansion project at Dakota Growers Pasta Company is up and running, doubling the plant’s milling capacity. The co-op is now able to supply their Minnesota facilities with semolina.

It’s the first time that Carrington High School has ever won a state championship in any NDSAA sanctioned sporting event. Tara Copenhaver and Sarah Klein were both individual champions. The 1999 State B Girls State Champs include Sarah Klein, Lynn Swanson, Amanda Prosser, Alissa Friezen, Jessie Irmen, Ann Johnson, Tara Copenhaver, Lindsey Perhus, Amy Wede, Heidi Hoffman, Lisa Van Ray and Adrianna Friezen.

The old Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in McHenry stands as a reminder of the faith of the hardy pioneers that settled McHenry, which is celebrating its centennial this summer. Although the church is no longer being used, the it is still being maintained.

Engagements - Andrea J. Topp and Marlen I. Haugen announce their engagement, a July 10 wedding is planned at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cooperstown. Sara Jan Gedrose and Jobey Lyle Lichtblau announce their engagement, an August 21 wedding is planned in First Lutheran Church, New Rockford. Wendy Hoppe and Michael Swanson announce their engagement and forthcoming marriage. A June 25 wedding is planned at First Congregational Church in Harvey.

Obituaries - Clarence Moen, 84, New Rockford passed away on Saturday, June 5; Fred Ebel, 100, Fessenden passed away Tuesday, June 1; Corrinen F. Bower, 70, New Rockford, passed away May 29; Agnes V. Bittner, 93, Fessenden, formerly Cathay area, died May 27.

Vets Club - Dance to Northern Express on Saturday, June 12.

Bordulac News - Olga Hart passed away at Golden Acres, Thursday. She leaves behind two sons, LeRoy and Dennis.

Mr. and Mrs. Loren Law celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary recently. They live in Edina, Minn.

Mr. and Mrs. Dan Beckley and Mr. and Mrs. Percy Beckley attended the 50th anniversary of Joyce and Ray Sabinash of Kensal. The reception was held at the KC Hall.
