When your top competition in the shot put at the state meet sparks legitimate discussion of what would happen if his attempt would clear the pit, you gladly take what you can place-wise.
Griggs/Midkota's Levi Kautzman did as well as he could have realistically imagined, finishing in second place to Kindred's Riley Sunram in the event in Bismarck at the State Track Meet.
The left-handed Kautzman hit a career-best 54 feet and 1/2 inch attempt, a full 7 1/2 feet behind Sunram's winning 61'6" toss.
Going into the meet, Sunram, who will play football for the Minnesota Golden Gophers, had the top throw in Class B history with a 64'1" at Fargo Davies on May 11. He would later break the Class B record in the discus previously held by Hillsboro/Central Valley's Kaden Pastian, uncorking an eye-popping 196'4".
His effort represented the only points for either the Titan boys or girls at the meet. Kautzman's eight points allowed G-M to take 22nd in the boys' race.
Other performances for the Titan boys included a 20th place by the 4x800 team of Isaac Johnson, Luka Berg, Davis Bengson and Jack Coombs (9:17.55), and Berg was 22nd in the 3,200 in a 10:51.13 time.
The G-M girls were led by Midkota seventh grader Kadence Spickler, who took 13th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:28.91.
Also in individual events, Tianna McCardle was 22nd in the 1,600, running 6:02.29.
Both Spickler and McCardle ran on the 4x800-meter relay team (10:37.54), along with Ellie Hoffman and Eryn Turner.
