Shipman earns state berth

At the Region 2 team qualifying meet on Tuesday, May 28, senior Grady Shipman put together a complete 18-hole round to earn the right to end his high school athletic career on his home turf.

Shipman shot a 37 on the front nine and 40 on the back for a 77, and was one of 19 golfers to achieve qualification by the 79-shot threshold at CrossRoads Golf Course.

One other Cardinal golfer, senior Wyatt Weninger, shot the best round of his career to just miss automatic qualification, shooting two 40's to finish with an 80.

Cardinal golfers competing also included Hunter Bachmeier (46-48-94), Callen Garber (46-49-95), Gabe Ricter (48-48-96), and Easton Mittleider (52-55-107).

Central Cass's Jake Thompson was medalist with a 72, followed by Kyle Campbell and Hunter Bindas of Kindred and Fargo Oak Grove's Will Olson at 73. Going down the top 10, Brody Dickhoff of Hillsboro/Central Valley and Carter Paulus of Oak Grove shot 74, NR-S' Jackson Schumacher shot 75, and Aidan Zugar (Oak Grove), Colin Voightman (Central Cass), Ryder Fugleberg (May-Port-CG) and Brady Johnson (Oak Grove) rounded out the leaderboard at 76.

Along with Shipman, other qualifiers were Sam Ziemer (CC), Braden Huard (MPCG), Cole Holzer and Kash Lorenz (CC), Ryland Kietzer (OG), Cody Fugleberg (MPCG) and Marcus Biffert (CC).

In the team standings, Oak Grove was the Region 2 champion at 299. Central Cass was four shots back at 303, and May-Port-CG third at 315.

Illustrating the competitive nature of Region 2, two other teams earned qualification by shooting under the 32-over-par stipulation. HCV, also with a 315, lost the tiebreaker to MPCG, and Kindred, one of the top Class B programs in recent years, shot a 316 to finish fifth. In most years, that would secure them at least a top-three spot.

NR-S (344) was sixth, followed by Carrington (346) in seventh and Griggs/Midkota (358) in eighth.

At the CrossRoads individual qualifier on Wednesday, May 22, CHS scores were as follows: Garber, 87; Ricter, 89; Weninger, 90; Bachmeier, 91; Mittleider, 103; and Bryar Page, 110.

The State Class B meet is at CrossRoads Tuesday-Wednesday, June 4-5.
