Rolling with the changes

A deluge of rain around nine hours before play was scheduled to begin last Tuesday washed out the entire first day of the State Class B Boys' Golf Tournament at CrossRoads Golf Club.

So, the North Dakota High School Activities Association condensed the planned June 4-5 slate into one day only, Wednesday, June 5, for 18 holes of competition to determine the best of the best.

However, those plans were further revised Tuesday night when an inspection of the course showed that the front nine holes at CrossRoads were inundated with water, scrapping the one-day plan.

From there, the tournament switched to a nine-hole only format on Wednesday, and 18 holes on Thursday, June 6, for a total of 27 holes.

Carrington senior Grady Shipman was the only qualifier for the Cardinals coming into the meet, and Jackson Schumacher of NR-S representing the Rockets at the meet.

In addition to the two locals in the field, the HWC Hornets qualified for the state golf meet as a group, by virtue of their championship in the Region 4 Tournament.

Listed shooters for the Hornets in the meet were Franklin Graumann, Carson Heilman, Kayl Sieg, Michael Felchle, Ryan McKinven and Garrett Heilman. The team is coached by Steven Felchle and Aaron Loff.

Due to production deadlines Wednesday afternoon, and the fact that Shipman did not tee off for his round until 2:20 p.m., neither Shipman's nor Schumacher's scores were available at the time of publication.

Because the New Rockford Transcript's press deadline is noon on Thursdays, Schumacher's first day results will be known and published in this week's edition of that paper.

Results from the State B Tournament, once they are finalized, will be posted to the Independent's website at http://www.fosterconews.com once the June 10 online issue is released.

For print readers and subscribers, a full recap of the state tournament will be published June 17.
