An annual Luther Day celebration was held at Spiritwood Lake on Sunday, July 10. Over 1000 people were in attendance at both the morning and afternoon services.
Mary Ann Hayashi, governor of Girls State, and Sam Zimmerman, representative from Carrington to Boys State held at the state college in Fargo, were featured speakers on the Kiwanis program held Wednesday.
The Carrington ball club defeated Leeds in a Tri-County Amateur league game at Leeds Sunday, 10 to 3, to put them definitely in the contender class for league honors. Bud Semmens and Sobolik were the battery for Carrington. Semmens was relieved by Oscar Dell in the fifth, but Semmens was credited with the win.
Fred Stanley Hoth, a former Barlow resident, suffered minor injuries in a fall from the deck of the Manette Bridge which spans the Port Washington Narrows, according to word received by members of his family who reside in Barlow and Carrington.
Twenty scouts and scouters will make the trip to Wilderness Camp located fourteen miles north of Park Rapids, Minn. The camp is opened to boys from this area July 17-23. The boys will stay for a period of one week and engage in many outdoor activities during that time.
Miss Elizabeth Lorentz of Mannheim, Germany, formerly employed in the extension service there and in Austria, while working on a doctor’s degree in economics, has recently come to North Dakota at the invitation of North Dakota Homemakers.
Recent births at Carrington Hospital include: July 6, a boy to Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Richter, Sykeston; July 10, a boy to Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Feichle, Carrington; July 10, a girl to Mr. and Mrs. Mike Schmidt, Heaton ; July 11, a boy to Mr. and Mrs. Leo Laber, Sykeston; July 12, a girl to Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Aljets, Carrington.

Barbara Schroeder, Bordulac, won the first-place trophy in the 4-H Hereford judging during the N.D. Junior Hereford Association Field Day at Tachenko Brothers Hereford Ranch, Grassy Butte. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Schroeder.
Army Pvt. Bruce A. Spitzer of Kensal has completed a ten-week basic course at Academy of Health Science of the Army at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Spitzer.
Forty-two golfers took part in the first two-ball foursome play at the Carrington Golf Club. Winners in golf were Rudy Hanson and Laura Engelhorn, Orv Baldwin and Evie Skytland were second-place winners.
Driving contests were won by Deloris Edwardson and Marv Skytland. Rudy Hanson and Mrs. Engelhorn were winners in putting contests.
One of Foster County’s longtime civic and agricultural leaders, J.H. “Harvey” Lyman, died July 4 at Carrington Hospital. He was 80.
After spending three weeks on a tour of Norway and Denmark, the only regret Olaf Gussiaas has is that he didn’t have more time to visit Sweden. He saw part of the Swedish coastline while on a boat trip to Denmark, where he spent two days.
A sharp increase in vandalism was reported by the Carrington Police Dept. during June. According to Police Chief Ervin Nicholson, this increase is due at least in part to lack of parental supervision of children sleeping outside in tents during the summer.
Mary Zwinger and Larry Reese were married June 8 at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, Sykeston, with Rev. Hasey officiating. Randy Sondag and Neal Garhofer were servers.
Maureen Engelstad of Carrington will sing with the All-state Lutheran Choir at Harvey July 11 at 7:30 p.m. in First Lutheran Church.

Central Heating and Cooling is a new business that just opened in Carrington. Tyrone Unruh is the owner. His new business offers a variety of services and products including sales and servicing gas furnaces, air conditioning, boilers and heat pumps. Commercial refrigeration will be a main focus of his business.
A new law enacted by the 1999 legislature changes the length of time persons under age 18 must hold their learner’s permit before getting a driver’s license. The former time was three months. The new law states that as of Aug. 1, no driver under age 18 may receive a driver’s license without first holding a permit for six months.
Justin Caslavka, a Traer, Iowa, native is the new manager of the Country General Store on Highway 281 south in Carrington.
Obituaries - Glenn “Jerry” Eldridge, 61, New Rockford, died Monday July 5; Theodore C. “Ted” Kollman, 92, formerly of Bordulac, died Thursday, July 1; Freddy A. Carlson, 73, New Rockford, died Tuesday, July 6.
Greg Hoeckle, two-time recipient of the North Dakota Coach of the Year Award for track and field, will be honored at the N.D. High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame/Coach of Year Awards Banquet at Grand Forks, July 29. Hoeckle was named top girls coach this year after his Carrington High School team won the state track and field championship at Grand Forks.
Area news - Bordulac - A wind storm hit the Bordulac community on Friday, June 25, at about 10:30 p.m. It took buildings and lots of trees.
The classes of 1954, 1955 and 1956 held their reunion. They had lunch in Bordulac on Saturday noon and supper in Carrington on Saturday evening. Those attending were: Dalton and Sue Peterson, Leo and Leona O’Connell, Dorothy and Ray Fundan, Elaine and Rolland Senechal, Buffa and Marlene Ekren, Arlene and Arnold Schroeder, Jerry and Elaine Ferguson, Mary Ann Barthel, Carol Lillo, Bill And Marlys Bauer, John Ihringer, Freddie Partlow, Victor and Loretta Lambrecht, Leo and Lola Zink, Lester and Bernice Zink and Clinton Horstad.
