July 21, 1949
Laverne Peterson, local angler, caught a 30-lb. snapping turtle in the Sheyenne River last Sunday morning. The turtle was to be sampled by Laverne and members of his family Wednesday evening.
The Girl Scout camp at Camp Rokiwan, Spiritwood Lake, opened Sunday, July 10 with sixty-four girls registered for the first week at the camp, including a group from Carrington. In attendance from Carrington were Shirley Stern, Mary Ellen Ebentier, Karen Skjonsby, Mary Ann Okert, Margaret Linderman and Judy Hunstad.
Keith Kahl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kahl of Carrington, is attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Keith graduated from Carrington High School as an honor student in 1948.
Carrington is to have a circus Tuesday, August 2, according to advance notices posted about town and in advertising. The circus is the John Pauling Great London Circus and will be here for one day only.
Vying for the title of North Dakota State Dairy Queen, one of the most attractive entrants will be Miss Donna Lyman, representing Carrington and Foster County. Miss Lyman was chosen at a community dairy day sponsored by Carrington Jaycees.
Work is progressing rapidly on the new 80’ x 24’ hog barn at the fairgrounds. The new barn is the latest in a series of improvements designed to make the fair bigger and better than it has been before.
Nils Johnson, nephew of Hilding Johnson, arrived in Carrington Monday morning from Kristianstad, Sweden. Mr. Johnson, 21 years of age, plans to make his home in Carrington permanently. He is an experienced sign painter and interior decorator, and plans to go into that type of work here.

Area students qualifying for the spring semester Dean’s List at UND were: Thomas Aljets, Joel Baldwin, Jim Busch, Carol Goter and James Stewart, all of Carrington; Barbara Hoyt, McHenry; and Wayne Goter, Woodworth.
Miss Jane Marie Zink, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Zink of Bordulac and Kevin Jay Lura, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Lura, Carrington, exchanged marriage vows and rings June 14, at a 7 p.m. ceremony at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Carrington.
Carol Waggoner, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Don Waggoner of Carrington, and Allen Metzger, son of Mrs. Louise Metzger of Bismarck were united in marriage on June 9 at the Bethel Assembly of God Church in Mandan. Rev. Don Waggoner, father of the bride, officiated at the wedding, assisted by Rev. Dave Sjostrom of Jamestown.
Mary Kay Neumiller became the bride of John I. Willilams in a double ring ceremony in St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, Sykeston, Saturday, June 29 at 4 p.m. with Rev. Adam Hasey, officiating.
Recent births at Carrington Hospital were July 9, boy to Mr. and Mrs. Steven Speldrich; July 12, girl to Mr. and Mrs. Jermone Zink; July 12, boy to Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Paulson; July 15, girl to Mr. and Mrs. Peter Kautzman, Jr.
The Foster County 4-H Home Economics team placed first out of 18 teams at the District Judging event held at Minot State College, July 9.
Donna Gussiaas was high individual scorer of the 87 participants. The other team members were Dee Doeling, Kim Goheen, Cherrie Hertel and Karen Zink.
Rev. Gordon N. Berntson, former pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church in Rugby, has arrived in Carrington to become pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church. His first Sunday at Trinity will be July 21.

The price tag from the July 2 hurricane force winds that ripped through central North Dakota, tearing up buildings, trees and electric utility poles was most measurable for Northern Plains Electric Cooperative. An estimated $160,000 worth of repair will need to be completed to straighten poles and “resagging wires” will take crews most of the summer to complete stated Claire Vigesaa Manager of Northern Plains.
A three-man TV camera crew was on Main Street one morning wrapping up some shots for a Home and Garden TV feature. The filming was part of a North Dakota feature for a new program called “Restore America” which depicts the restoration of old buildings. The three spent one day at Ann Hoffert’s Pipestem Creek, where old farm buildings are restored for her natural wreath and bird feeder business and they spent another day at the historical Putnam House in Carrington.
Dustin Kost, a member of Fessenden/Bowdon FFA chapter, received a Specialty Animal Production/Entrepreneurship State Award and was an Oil Crops Award winner at the State FFA Convention held recently in Fargo.
Prairie Rose and the Homegrown Sidekicks recently won the first annual KFYR radio Homegrown Talent Contest at Bismarck. The Bowdon entertainers are Cathy Mack Unterseher and her children.
Area news - Woodworth: Jim O’Neill worked at the Billy Homes home to pile the old barn into one area on Saturday. The barn was another victim of the June 25 storm.
Brent, Lorinda, Kylie and Brady Engebretson, Hazen, came on Friday evening for the weekend at Dale and Arleen Harr’s. On Sunday all of the above went to Aberdeen to visit Storybook Land.
Sunday evening, Dale and Arleen Harr and Arvin and LuAnn Goter had supper in Carrington to celebrate their July wedding anniversaries.
Monday Mitch, Lynette and Ted Schulz went to Medora to attend Dakota Central’s meetings. Cameron and David were at Pastor Martin’s while their parents were gone.
