From the Past: Bergan, Heinley on All-Star team

75 Years Ago

August 11, 1949

For faithful service with the Standard Oil Co. for 20 years, Art Anderson of Carrington was presented a 20-year pin at a company party held last Friday night at the Miami Grill’s Fiesta Room.

A youngster playing with matches was blamed for a fire which did about $500 damage to the Tenborg potato warehouse Friday afternoon. The child set fire on the outside of the structure, and it spread to the building. Only the driveway shed was damaged, the main building being of tile.

C.W. Yoder, Peter Edinger and O. Brown went to Bismarck Tuesday to attend the annual game conference. At the conference, the game and fish department announced awards in the annual crow shoot. One of the winners is Laverne Gussiaas, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.K. Gussiaas, Carrington. His prize is a Winchester .22 repeater rifle with a telescopic sight.

Edward K. Thompson, a 1927 graduate of the University of North Dakota, has been appointed as managing editor of Life Magazine. Mr. Thompson worked with the Foster County Independent here at Carrington following his graduation from the university.

Extensive improvements are in the process of developing in the Olaf and Pat clothing store in Carrington, operated by Pat Clark and son Gordon. The remodeling is to be thorough and will give the entire store a “new look,” according to Pat.

Persons looking for an explanation of the sudden sprouting of whiskers in Carrington have only to learn that the VFW Cooties are advertising five dances which they are sponsoring during the Foster County Fair Week. The dance, scheduled for the armory and Rainbow Gardens, will be held on the nights of Sept. 21, 22 and 23.

At a recent meeting of the Cooties, the Whisker Club was organized for the purpose of promoting the dances.

50 Years Ago

August 7, 1974

Two young men who starred as Carrington High School athletes will have an unusual experience Aug. 10. That is the date of the North-South All-Star football game at NDSU Fargo.

Taking part will be Doug Bergan and Tim Heinley of Carrington. They left July 28 to begin practices and to go with the All-Star group to visit the Twin Cities Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children to Minneapolis.

Darwin Solberg, Glenfield, was the sixth place finalist during the National Showmanship Contest finals among 32 contestants from many different states during the All-America Hereford Dream Field Day at Rusk Ranch, Sun City, Kansas.

Carrington has seen many bicyclists this summer, but never as many at once as went through the city last Thursday. A group called deCycles, composed of 54 boys ages 13 - 20, stopped at the city parking lot in the afternoon to stoke up on cookies and rest briefly before continuing to Jamestown, where they planned to spend the night.

Barbara J. Hoyt, daughter of Duwayne W. Hoyt of McHenry is attending a U.S. Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps field training encampment at Eglin AFB, Florida. She is a 1972 graduate of McHenry High School.

For the first time in the 62 years of its existence, Glenfield has had no food store since the auction of the inventory and equipment of Isgrig’s Store Friday.

After advertising the auction, Mr. and Mrs. Elvy Isgrig sold the contents of their store building to the bare walls. They had decided to retire, and no buyer had come forward to take over the business.

Gail Kuss and her daughter Kandi showed off their craftsmanship in decorating a 54-foot-long sheet cake commemorating 54 years in business for the Wenaas family, who run Super Valu, in Carrington.

The Carrington Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors visited Nodak Mutual Insurance recently and welcomed the new manager, Todd Bickett.

The Carrington Police Departments investigating two church burglaries this summer. In both incidents the churches were open but the office doors were locked. On July 10, The First Church of the Nazarene reported $100 in cash stolen from a cabinet in the office. Some type of pry bar was used to enter the office. In a similar incident at Trinity Lutheran Church, reported June 30, $50 in cash was stolen,

Stephanie Black and Jeffrey Johnson announce their engagement. Parents of the couple are Lyle and Annola Black, McHenry and Jim and Kathy Johnson, Kensal.

Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Neb., has announce the acceptance of Mike Brickner. He will join 110 students to begin their studies this fall.

Area deaths - Vivian “Violet” Holland, 90, Carrington, died Tuesday, July 27; Arthur “Art” Docter, 86, Hurdsfield, died Sunday, August 1; John “Swed” Hendrickson, 88, Carrington, died Thursday, July 22.

Area News - Nordmore - Last Monday, Angela and Jean Miller, Jennifer Helm and Sonja Harrison attended the North Dakota State Fair at Minot, and Angela modeled her dress she made and won first place.

Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Gussiaas entertained the following for Elvira Gussiaas Friday evening on her birthday. Guests for supper in her honor were Mr. and Mrs. Scott Mehring and Shae, Mr. and Mrs. Gaylen Rosenau and girls and Mr. and Mrs. Darwin Hagemeister and family.

Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Schroeder entertained Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Medhus and Michael, Edwin Gussiaas and Casey Hauge for supper Monday evening.

The group from Red Willow Bible Camp were guests at Kvernes Church on Sunday. A good program was given by the young people. Breakfast was served to all attending after the service.
