If not for two disastrous innings, the Carrington Redbirds put a scare into a pair of quality teams at the State Class 'B' Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament for the 13-to-15 year old division Friday and Saturday, July 26-27.
At points in their tourney journey, the 'Birds trailed defending state champion Park River by just 6-4, and were in the conversation for an upset against the Burlington Bulldogs in loser-out play, staring at a 3-2 late game deficit.
But that's where things went south fast for Carrington, as the wheels came off in a 14-run fourth inning to fall to the Pirates, 20-4, and later gave up 11 runs in the seventh to be eliminated by the 'Dogs, 14-2.
With the losses, the Redbirds' season ended with a 5-16 record, but with the hope that another year of seasoning will lead to improvement on the diamond in the future. During the 2024 summer, 10 of the 15 rostered players for Carrington this season were 13 years of age.
In action from the rest of the tournament, the Kindred Vikings won their third championship in program history with a 12-2 six-inning victory over the LaMoure A's Monday, July 29. The District 7 champions went 4-0 at the tournament, outscoring opponents, 33-7.
Beulah finished third at the 2024 State 'B', followed by Park River in fourth, Burlington and Hatton-Northwood fifth and sixth, and both the Redbirds and Rugby finished at 0-2 during the four days of play.
