From the Past: Chamber welcomes new business

75 Years Ago

August 11, 1949

Of the six farms in Foster County entered in the state soil conservation contest, the farm of J.H. Lyman of Grace City was scored highest and was recommended for consideration of the state judging committee for a state award, it was announced by County Agent, Geo,. F. Stewart.

Chosen to handle the Carrington membership campaign for the Central Concert Association of New Rockford, to be held during the week of August 22-27, have been Mrs. Jacob Haas, Mrs. John Held, and Mrs. Harry M. Knott.

Mrs. Clifford Silkey, Mrs. Frank Pergande, and Mrs. James Rude were hostesses at a pink and blue shower at the Silkey home Friday afternoon, honoring Mrs. Albert Fritza.

Mr. and Mrs. Freddie Holtorf, Barbara and Joe, and Mrs. Hazel Hortorf, Stillwater, Minn., visited last week at the Wm. Hains and W. A. Rosenau homes. Mrs. Holtorf and Mrs. Hains are sisters.

Mr. and Mrs. James Pierce are the parents of a daughter born on Tuesday at New Rockford.. She has been named Viki Lynn.

J.J. Sackett and daughters, Florence and Margaret of Los Gatos, Calif., visited friends in Longview Saturday. While here they were guests at the Theo. Fischer home in Carrington.

Recent births at Carrington Hospital include a boy on August 11, born to Mr. and Mrs. John Hammes, Sykeston, and on August 17, a girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Walt Joyce, Carrington.

Alton L. Torblaa is the new executive secretary of the Foster County Welfare Board, succeeding D. J. Graham, who has moved west.

Friday and Saturday will bring “The Kissing Bandit,” starring Kathleen Grayson and Frank Sinatra in Technicolor. Another Technicolor feature will be showing Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, when “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” will be showing with Frank Sinatra, Esther Williams and Gene Kelly.

50 Years Ago

August 7, 1974

UND degree candidates from this area include: Mark Zink, bachelor of arts; Dallas Speidel and Keith Wahlund, bachelor of science in business administration; Mrs. James (Kerrine) Oshanyk, master of education, all from Carrington; and Lorriane DeRemer, Pingree, master of science.

Bernard J. Kramer of Kensal is the new Farmers Home Administration committeeman for Eddy and Foster Counties, county supervisor Dennis W. Larson announced.

If the reaction of those attending a public meeting for a proposed medical building is indicative of general community spirit, Carrington will probably be able to make the proposal a working project. About 140 people turned out for the meeting to hear ideas of the steering committee and an architect.

Bordulac Bombers pee wee baseball team ended the season with a record of five wins, eight losses. The Bombers are coached by Loretta Carr. Team members include Jerry Barthel, Dan and Dean Beckley, Clinton Carr, Robert Erickson, Dennis and Kenny Ihringer, Danny Rosenau, Thad and Troy Rosenau, Carl, Jim, Todd and Wally Scheen, Ken Wolf, John Schweigert and Steven Wolf.

Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Emerson announced the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Lezlie Ann, to James Michael Kraemer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Nottestad. All are from Carrington.

On July 28, Mrs. Alma Harding was honored on her 85th birthday by her 13 children at New Rockford Park. This was the first time in 25 years her whole family had been together.

A family picnic was held August 4 at the Charles E. March home to honor Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. March on their 50th wedding anniversary.

Last Saturday, Mrs. Owen Thurlow went to Bismarck to met Suzuko Hanai, a guest from Japan. They spent two days at the Thurlow cabin on Fish Lake in Minnestoa, where they met Kathy and Jane Thurlow, who had been visiting in Minneapolis. Sunday, the Thurlows took Suzuko Hanai to Fort Totten to the Sioux Indian Pow Wow.

Carrington’s new city landfill should be open in two weeks providing no more heavy rains. Wet weather has caused problems for landfill preparation much of the summer.

Carrington Chamber president John Kienow and Chamber manager Julie Brown recently welcomed a new business, Central Heating and Cooling, owned by Tyrone Unruh.

Lois Ripplinger was selected employee of the month at Dakota Growers Pasta Company. Lois is a machine operator and has worked 5 years for Dakota Growers.

New Arrivals - Brent Michael, born Aug. 12 at Carrington Health Center to Brandy Mosser and Mike Pesce, New Rockford. Nicole Kaitlynn born Wednesday, August 4 to Tammy Sorenson and Andrew Willey of Carrington.

Obituaries - Joseph “Joe” Jaeger, 84, Carrington died Friday, August 6; Paul Krubeck, 91, formerly of Kensal, died Wednesday, August 4; Dwight Eldon Dunn, 55, Carrington died Saturday, August 7.

Henry Vanderbush is having a Barn Revival on his farm, 9 miles east of New Rockford August 27 - 29. There will be special music each night by local musicians, entertainment for children every night under age 5, coffee and sweets after each meeting and on Sunday free hot dogs from 5:30 - 6:30.

Chaseley News - Pat Fortney and Tillie visited Carl Rexine on Saturday.

Several from Chaseley attended funeral services for Art Dockter in Hurdsfield Thursday afternoon.

Twelve ladies from the Chaseley Church enjoyed supper at Carrington Thursday and then went on to New Rockford to see “The Murder Room” play.

Walter and Geraldine Knutson spent Tuesday to Friday at Joe and Joyce’s and then left for their home in California. Other visitors Thursday were Mr. and Mrs. Ben Heintz, Stanley, and Deanna Opp. The Heintzes were supper guests.
