The Carrington FFA Land Evaluation Team of Molly Hansen, Abby Lee, Cyrena Kuss, Laura Krause, Kenleigh Hinrichs, and Cally Hansen placed first at the State FFA Land Evaluation Career Development Event held in Rolla, Thursday, August 1.
Individually, Molly Hansen placed first, earning a $250 cash award and the FFA "Baby Bison" trophy. Cally Hansen and Cyrena Kuss tied for third place, Kenleigh Hinirichs placed sixth, Abby Lee placed ninth and Laura Krause placed 31st.
The team will represent North Dakota at the National Land Judging Contest in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, next May.
In the land evaluation event, contestants determine surface soil texture, permeability, depth of soil, slope, present surface soil thickness, past erosion, wind erosion hazard, water erosion hazard, saltiness and surface runoff to determine a land capability class.
Once the land capability class is determined, the contestants suggest vegetative treatments, mechanical treatments and fertility recommendations to make the land more productive, but also to conserve the land. The contestants evaluate a total of four "sites" in the contest.
