From the Past: Bill Bauer lives out Old West dream

75 Years Ago

August 25, 1949

Three persons from here are attending the Red Cross National Aquatic School at Brimson, MN. According to Mrs. F.B. Peik, water safety chairman of the Foster County chapter. Those attending the school are: Bill Chaffee, Tommy Cousins and Alice Mae Reimers. All are graduates of Carrington High School, and all will be attending a college this fall.

Mary Ann Hayashi, governor of ND Girls State was to arrive in Washington, D.C. last Sunday to attend the third Girls’ Nation meeting sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.

Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Bauley and Mr. and Mrs. John H. Bauley and son attended the air show in Devils Lake Sunday, where Col. Eisenhart and Major James E. Bauley participated after coming from Washington, D.C. in a B25.

Seventy relatives and friends gathered at Red Willow Lake Sunday honoring Mr. and Mrs. Ingvald Aarestad of Everett, WA. Who are spending a three week vacation in North Dakota with their children and relatives and his brother John, McHenry.

Wednesday Mrs. Aden Wescom, Mrs. Delbert Steele, Mrs. Jerry O’Donald and Miss Jane Fredrickson took drivers exams at Carrington.

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Flint of Hooper, WA, arrived by auto Sunday for a brief visit with her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Row, also with the Walter Aultman and Fred R. Topp families. It has been 31 years since the families were together.

Mrs. Fritz Carr, and children Larry and Charlotte, Mrs. Herb Lund, Leo and Edson went to Devils Lake Friday where they attended the circus.

The teachers for the two Rose Hill schools have been hired. Miss Naomi Long is going to teach No. 4 and Mrs. Art Quenemoen is teacher for No. 1

August 21, 1974

Mrs. Robert Innes, the former Joan Meland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Meland, Glenfield residents, received her doctor’s degree (Ph.D.) in mathematics this summer at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

Area students who have been awarded scholarships for the 1974-75 academic year at UND include: Gregory Pretzer and James Steward, Carrington; Barbara Hoyt, McHenry; Pamela Kienzle, Woodworth, Valerie Lies, Cathay.

Grace City, McHenry and Kensal all fared quite well in the State Class B softball tournament August 18 at Jamestown, taking second, third and fourth respectively.

Eight young people from the Grafton State School are living with area families and learning what it’s like to live in a town as a family member instead of an institution. It’s a new kind of exchange program for Carrington and the young people likely found some family ways just as foreign as would visitors from distant lands. They have lived almost exclusively at the State School with no family to visit for holidays and summers, according to Mrs. Sheila Tuhy, chairman of the project.

A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Bradley Schulz at Carrington Hospital, August 15.

Priscilla Jan Olson and Donald C. Giffey were united in marriage at a double ring ceremony July 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Federated Church, Carrington, with Rev. Chris Miller officiating.

Kathy Straley and Pam Kautzman, Carrington, participated in the Foster County Farmers Union Senior Youth tour this summer.

Mr. and Mrs. Eldo Lee returned recently from Beverly, Mass., where they visited daughter Sue. She accompanied them on a trip through northern New England states, Montreal and Quebec.

August 23, 1999

Bill Bauer is living out his dream of the Old West. Bill’s dream is going on a six week, 800 mile long journey on horseback. He is riding from Carrington to Riverton, Wyoming. He will venture through the Black Hills and on top of mountains. Once he reaches Wyoming he will be joining his brother, Gary, on an elk hunt on horseback.

Weningers brothers buy Carrington Motor Company. Larry and Mark Weninger have followed their dad, Tony, into Carrington Motors from his start there over 30 years ago. Joining the three is Steve Brinster, who will do auto body and painting.

The Carrington High School foreign language department hosted a pre-school rummage sale last week to raise funds for a trip to Mexico.

Heavy rain Thursday, Aug. 12 totaled 6.5 to just over 8 inches in parts of the county. Water covered the Dan Gross road 6.5 miles south and 2.5 miles west of Carrington.

Deanna Zander and Robert Zumbaum were married on June 12 at St. John’s Catholic Church, New Rockford with Father Jerome Hunkler officiating.

Obituaries - Ron Fornshell, 40, Carrington, died Thursday, August 12; Carl Neumiller, 90, Carrington, formerly of Heaton, died Wednesday, August 18; Ingrid K. Solberg, 85, Carrington, died Saturday, August 14; Harold N. Haldorson, Sr., 77, Bowdon, died Wednesday, August 18.

Area news - Glenfield: Margaret and Lester Dreher had supper with Douglas and Ann Dreher in Devils Lake, Friday.

Friday, August 13, Ruby Pewe attended the Retired Teachers meeting at John’s Country House, New Rockford.

Clarice Somerville attended a bridal shower for her granddaughter, Stephanie Black, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, McHenry, Sunday, August 15.

Marge Balvitsch visited Elda Talle, August 9, at Cooperstown.
