From the Past: School-to-work program started

75 Years Ago

September 8, 1949

Carrington High School has an enrollment of 279 as compared to 269 last year. It was announced by Superintendent N. H. Hanson.

O.T. Belsheim, director of the school band, said he had 56 students enrolled in the band this year. In the opening week last year, the band numbered 39 pieces.

Two Northern Pacific employees escaped death in an explosion of the locomotive of the Carrington-McClusky branch train a mile west of Goodrich Monday afternoon. Fireman Albert Wagner and brakeman Roy Tachider, both of Turtle Lake, were rushed to a Bismarck hospital after having been injured in the accident. Wagner had a leg burn, and Tachider had flash burns on his neck and face. The engineer, Jim Berry, was not injured.

The schedule of the Grand this week includes “Illegal Entry” for Friday and Saturday and “Great Dan Patch” for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, Dennis O’Keefe and Gail Russell are among the stars featured in the latter.

Supreme Court Justice James Morris called on friends in Carrington Saturday. He also attended to property interests in the Bordulac community.

North Dakota retailers must pay the state the 2 percent sales tax on all their gross receipts, District Judge George Thom, Jr., of Bismarck ruled Tuesday.

At a candlelight ceremony in the Kensal Methodist Church Monday evening, Miss Gloria Mae Lambrecht, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Lambrecht, became the bride of Eugene E. Olson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Olson, Leonard, N.D.

September 4, 1974

Larry Kollman is the new owner of Phillips 66 on Main Street in Carrington, formerly owned by Gene Schimke, who has been in business in the city for 38 years.

The Carrington Manor 18-plex apartment building previously under resident management of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Murphy, is now under management of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Laschovitch of Goodrich.

Preparations are being completed for the Mrs. Jaycee style show to be held in Carrington on September 6. Co-chairwomen are Mrs. Jolean Haugen, Mrs. Mary Jo Engelhart and Mrs. Rose Nilles. Styles for each decade of the past century will be displayed, accompanied by narration. Entertainment will be provided throughout the evening.

Bill Sutherland, Carrington, caught a whopper of a walleye - 8 lb., 8 oz. at Lake Ashtabula, June 23.

Carrington’s 1974 football team lost its first game of the year to Fessenden, Friday night by a score of 16 - 0. Tom Hatleli, new CHS coach said the football team doesn’t have a lot of experiences since many veteran players graduated, but the current team has “pretty good speed.” Co-captains are Scott Miller and Jim Cook.

The Carrington girls basketball team begins the season with a home game against Grace City on September 5, Karen Olafson is coach, with Jolean Haugen assisting.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilson McCleery of Edmunds were honored at their home Sunday afternoon, August 25, as they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

A bridal shower for Neta McMonagle was held Thursday evening at the Arthur Johnson home. Hostesses were Mrs. Reuben Sebastian, Mrs. Kenneth Anderson and Mrs. Johnson.

Pastor Peter and Karla Coen-Tuff, serving Trinity Lutheran Church here for the past 8 ½ years, have accepted a call to Grand Forks.

Dakota Kids Daycare and Carrington Health Center became the first ever winners of a Regional Best Practices Award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for providing and innovative meal service at a daycare center.

Duane Zwinger, once a familiar face in the halls of Carrington High is returning this year to head up the brand new School-to-Work program.

A big box full of prizes was an exciting way for an 8-year-old Carrington boy to learn he had won a nation-wide coloring contest. Rio Rindy, son of Rock and Rosanne Rindy had done just that. Rio had won third place.

New Arrivals - Joslyn Kori Hoyt, was born August 12 at Jamestown Hospital, she weighed 8 pounds, 3.5 ounces. Parents are Bobby and Sharon Hoyt, McHenry. Madeson Anne Smith was born to Corey and Cassie Smith, Carrington, she weighed 8 pounds, 9.9 ounces.

Melissa Harvala, Carrington, was recently selected to perform with the 1999-2000 Jamestown College Concert Choir, North Dakota’s first collegiate touring choir.

Area News - Sykeston

Alyce Zwinger, Lena Thomas, Eleanor Kurtz and Virginia Neumiller were visitors and luncheon guests at the Louise Garman home. Lena brought hors d’ oeuvre and relish trays.

Lucille Speldrich, Celine Fetch, Casey and Shauna were Saturday guests for birthday cake and ice cream at the Steve and Connie Speldrich home in honor or Abby’s sixth birthday.

Friday, Alvina Hammes visited her brother, Art Neumiller, at Golden Acres Manor and helped him celebrate his birthday with greetings and flowers. She also visited Maria Neumiller in her new home in Carrington.

Lawrence and Loretta Zwinger and Bob and Carol Weber visited William and Ann Balvitsch Sunday at the LTC in Carrington.
