Ryder rolls 'Riders

Bickett tandem combines for four touchdowns in 34-0 shutout of Southern McLean -

In just one half of football, Ryder Bickett put Carrington fans in an ecstatic mood for what the 6'2" tight end is capable of providing the Cardinal offense if he has a full season.

Bickett had three touchdown receptions of 38, 70 and 25 yards, with those plays representing his 133 yards of offense in the Cards' 34-0 season-opening win over the Southern McLean Roughriders Friday, August 23, at Cardinal Stadium.

His cousin, quarterback Josh Bickett, was also on fire in the passing game, connecting on all but one of his 12 throws for 258 yards. The senior signal caller also added a 12-yard strike to Tate Wolsky near the end of the first half, and called his own number in the third quarter on a two-yard plunge to finish with 313 all-purpose yards.

"Offensively, we were able to run the ball effectively early," Head Coach Kyle Smith said. "When you can do that, the passing game opens up, and Josh was on the money all night."

On the first few drives, running back McKade Zink rattled off a few big runs before a tweaked ankle sidelined him for much of the first half. Backup Peyton Harrington had success running laterally, finishing with 50 yards on five carries, and also added a two-point conversion and a pair of extra point kicks.

The defense was stout, keeping the Roughrider big plays to a minimum.

Corbin Clifton had 10 solo tackles, and Wolsky combined for 14 total stops. Alec Threadgold had two tackles for loss and a sack.

"I was really pleased to get a shutout defensively, especially with us not really knowing what Southern McLean's offense was going to do," Smith said. "We kept everything in front of us, and made them earn every yard."

Clifton had three catches for 52 yards, and Zink two for 48 in the win.

"We need to clean some things up, and continue to get better each week," said Smith.

This Friday, the Cards travel to Spoiler Country in northeast North Dakota to take on Grafton at 7 p.m. GHS lost their first game to Hillsboro/Central Valley, 40-6.
