From the Past: Zink sworn in as member of 119th Fighter Wing, ND National Guard

75 Years Ago

September 22, 1949

Thomas H. Cousins became the owner of the Club Café, business and building, in a deal closed between him and Ralph Law, the former owner, on Tuesday of this week. The deal goes into effect on October 1.

When the Fairway grocery store opens for business on Saturday morning, October 1, there will be a new management to wait upon the public. On that date, Russel Marcussen and Floyd Feichle will be the new owners of that store. They purchased the business from H.O. Beck.

St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran congregation in Kensal will rededicate its church on Sunday, Sept. 25, with former Pastor, Rev. Geo. Schubarth, of Miles City, Mont., speaking at 10 a.m. The church has been enlarged and completely renovated, and an oil-burning furnace has been installed in the basement.

The cornerstone of the new Masonic Lodge building in Carrington will be laid with appropriate ceremonies on Monday, Sept. 26, at 2:30 p.m. it was announced this week by J.L. Sparrow, worshipful master of the local lodge.

Mrs. Andy Heilman entertained in honor of her daughter, Andrea Kay, on Thursday. She was three years old that day. The guests were little friends and their mothers.

Mrs. J.M. Carr, and Helen and Mrs. Cyrus Copenhaver, drove to Clinton, Iowa, last week, where Helen enrolled in the Mt. St. Clair College. They also visited at Mason City, Tama and New Hampton, Iowa, and at St. Paul, Minn.

Mrs. A.C. Anderson entertained several neighbors and friends at a party at her home Monday evening to honor Mrs. Masel Watne. Serving with Mrs. Anderson were Mrs. Ted Clark, Sr., and Mrs. Ike Gwynn. Mr. and Mrs. Watne are leaving for Minot, where they will make their home. Mr. Watne will be foreman with the American Electrical Company located there.

September 11, 1974

Three members of the medical bulding steering committee, Lloyd Case, Lee Aljets and Jim Erickson, approached the city council at the regular monthly meeting Sept. 9 to request a city-appointed committee through which to get donations for the proposed medical facility.

As of Sept. 1, Lynn Beck has been the new administrative supply technician for Carrington’s unit of the National Guard, Company A. Beck replaced Ed Stegmeier, who was promoted to become property book officer of the 141st Engineer Battalion, Valley City.

The South Central Dakota Regional Council’s Criminal Justice Advisory Board approved two grant applications requesting funds from the N.D. Combined Law Enforcement Council. One of the applications is from the Foster County Sheriff’s Department for a mobile radio ($785).

The Carrington girls’ basketball team lost their second game at New Rockford by one point, 37-38. High scores for the local team were Penne Skadberg, 16 points, and Joni Bronaugh, 13.

Karen Mitchell was honored at a bridal shower held at Elmer Finch’s home Sept. 8. Assisting Mrs. Finch were her daughter, Kathy, and Mrs. Roy Kliem.

A memorial service for Mrs. Earl Straley was held when Retired Teachers met at the Chieftain Friday. It was conducted by Mrs. Agnes Olson and Mrs. John Schmid.

The Foster County Fair flower show, sponsored by the Foster County Horticulture Society, drew 114 entries this year.

Marriage vows were exchanged by Karen Diane Richter and Don Wade Schumacher at an afternoon ceremony on Aug. 31 at St. Elizabeth’s Church, Sykeston.

A step toward a more efficient garbage management for the city of Carrington, Mayor Allen Metzger told the City Council that he is in the talking stages with the city of Jamestown to see if they would allow Carrington to haul garbage down to Jamestown and use their landfill, saving time and money. An earlier proposal was turned down by Jamestown, but with changes to their landfill they now have reconsidered.

Members of the 1999 Carrington High School Homecoming Court were crowned. Queen Nicole Krause and King Ryan Zink, Joel Bronaugh, Amanda Prosser, Sarah Willyard and Mike Swanson were also in the court.

New Rockford’s Rick Irmen was chosen as September’s Employee of the Month by his co-workers at Dakota Growers Pasta Company.

Jennifer Willyard, Carrington, is the recipient of the Carrington Education Association scholarship this year.

Nicholas Zink, a 1999 graduate of Carrington High School, was recently sworn in as member of the 119th Fighter Wing, North Dakota National Guard. The Airman First Class serves as an explosive ordinance disposal apprentice in the 119th Civil Engineer Squadron.

Carla and James Hardy, Carrington, are the parents of a baby girl, Aishlee Rein Hardy, born Thursday, Sept. 9, at Carrington Health Center. She weighed 8 pounds, 3.4 ounces.

Melissa Lutman and Clark Davis, Carrington, are the proud parents of a baby boy, Brady Richard Davis, born Thursday, August 26. He weighed 9 pounds, 6.7 ounces.

Obituaries –Violet W. Pierce, 80, Carrington, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Golden Acres Manor; William Jacob Rahif, 102, Binford, died Saturday, September 11, at his home; Dorwin R Boy, 86, formerly of New Rockford, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, at the North Dakota Veteran’s Home in Lisbon.
