Two consecutive regulation match losses have been a rare occurrence for the Carrington Cardinal volleyball program.
The Cards came up short in their District 5 opener against the Edgeley-Kulm/Montpelier Rebels in Edgeley Thursday, September 12, taking the first set by a tally of 25-22 before falling in the next three, 22-25, 21-25 and 15-25.
Isabel Wendel's 10 kills and two aces led the Cards in both statistics, and she also had 17 assists. Teammate Brynn Smith was the top passer for the match with 20 assists in the loss.
Offensively, Harper Kollman (nine kills), Mercedes Lura (eight) and Calleigh Hewitt (seven) helped keep Carrington in contention against the Rebels.
Edyn Hoornaert finished with two blocks, and libero Kenadie Pazdernik had 17 digs.
E-K-M was paced by a pair of outstanding hitters, Elli Lloyd (18 kills) and Libby Mathern. The latter had a double-double with 13 kills and 16 digs.
Lloyd also had her serve on point with four aces, while Betsy Huber had four blocks and a trio of Rebs (Kalyn Klusman, Lloyd and Mazie Tjernlund) put up three apiece.
On the other side of the Valley City Hi-Liner Classic over the weekend (see related article), the Cards returned to play at the East Gym last Tuesday, September 17, with a nonregion matchup against a resurgent Park River/Fordville-Lankin program that has blazed out to a 10-2-2 start this season playing in Region 2.
The Aggie middle block and back row was a complication for the Cards, and they fell in straight sets, 21-25, 16-25 and 18-25.
