Hornets need five to beat KC

Harvey-Wells County came from two games down to win the final two sets and defeat Kidder County, 3-2, in non-region volleyball action on Tuesday, September 9, at Fessenden.

Game one started with the Wolves dominating. Kidder County started with a 6-1 run, and quickly moved the lead to 11-2 on two kills from Taylor Zimmerman. The Hornets started their comeback in game one with an ace from Taylor Nelson and kills from Rachel Neumiller and Braylee Keller to cut the lead to 14-10. Another kill from Keller and one from Rylee Jones cut the lead to just one at 16-15.

HWC was never able to grab a lead, as an ace from Breanah Pfaff and a kill from Ava Schmidt moved the lead back to three. Several HWC attack errors added to the Kidder County total, as they went on to win game one, 25-19.

HWC started strong in game two, opening up a 5-1 lead early with the help of a Jones kill and two attack errors from the visitors. Zimmerman added two kills and Sidney Mock added another to tie the game at six for Kidder County. Neumiller recorded two kills and Christalea Wagner added another, helping HWC slowly pull away to a 18-10 lead. Kills from Zimmerman and Pfaff, as well as an ace from Drew Stroh, pulled the Wolves back to within five at 21-16, but another kill from Neumiller and two more from Keller gave game two to the Hornets, 25-22.

Games three and four were closely contested sets. The Hornet big hitters and the Wolves' front line paired off nicely, as many of the rallies ended at the hands of one of the front row hitters. Keller recorded three aces and three kills, while Nelson added three kills, a stuff block and an ace to help HWC take a 19-13 lead in set three. Kidder County responded with two kills from Moch and an ace from Stroh to rally back for a 26-24 win.

The Wolves kept the momentum early in game four with a quick 3-0 lead. Three HWC kills from Nelson kept HWC close, as the two teams traded points. Two aces from Brooklyn Dockter tied the game at 16, but the Wolves took control late, 24-19. Keller added two kills for the home team to tie the game at 24, and the see-saw set continued to extra points. The Hornets got kills from Neumiller and Keller to finish off the comeback, 31-29.

The Hornets took control of the final set early, with Keller slamming down three kills for a quick 6-3 lead. Nelson's block at 9-4 gave HWC an added burst, and kills from Neumiller and Keller down the stretch sealed the set victory for the Hornets, 15-7, and the match win, 3-2.

The win for the Hornets improved their record to 4-3 overall, while the Wolves dropped to 4-3 on the season.
